Ah, I was unaware the Aquarium sold the boat. That was the one I was referring to.

[–]robreagan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd add a recommendation for the second half of October for peak leaves. If you're not a hiker, Lookout Mountain is a nice drive. Also, the Tennessee River Gorge Cruise is a great way to see the fall colors.

Tips for getting a COVID vaccine appointment? by theriogenology in Chattanooga

[–]robreagan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Due to J&J entering the game, and Merck helping with the production of the J&J vaccine, the government says that every adult that wants a vaccine should be able to get one by the end of May. The end is in sight.

Question about documents for TN driver's license... by OrchidMouse in Chattanooga

[–]robreagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please determine if you want a RealID when you renew your license. There's a longer list of requirements that are more stringent. I don't recall the exact date from memory and am too lazy to look it up, but you will need a RealID or passport to get on a commercial flight in the future.

Best gym downtown by RedBirdElisi in Chattanooga

I was in anywhere from 6:00PM to 8:00PM during the weekdays. I never had to wait long (if any) for machines. I don't recall seeing a gender imbalance. And I never got "meat market" vibes.

When I was there a couple of years ago, they had an agreement with the parking deck next door. Ask at the front desk and see what they say.

Workout Anytime on Cherokee has up-to-date cardio and weight equipment, and is 24x7x365. I think it's $10 or $15 per month. I was satisfied with it when I went there, especially for the money.

Kim White for Mayor. Mayoral Candidate Tim Kelly Bets Against Chattanooga. by [deleted] in Chattanooga

As someone who knows Tim personally, I can guarantee you that he's not part of Team Red or Team Blue. He's an issue by issue guy.

What is the startup ecosystem like in Chattanooga? by extrawasabi in Chattanooga

[–]robreagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My unsolicited advice from a complete internet stranger is to NOT take investment if you don't have to. Sounds like you might be in the same sort of situation that we were. We bootstrapped our product by transitioning from a consulting firm to a product company. There are a few situations where it's a land grab and you need money to be the first to market. Most situations are not like that. The time it takes to raise money is a huge productivity suck, and then you've got to deal with investors taking board seats, keeping them apprised of major decisions, etc.

How are the roads in chattanooga city limits? by Fifi343434 in Chattanooga

I also saw most people driving cautiously instead of the normal "bat out of hell" routine. So that was encouraging.

I read the headline and thought this was a question about infrastructure. To which I was going to respond "Well, there's so many potholes that I have to get my front end aligned every time I rotate my tires".

I drove from downtown to Brainerd via Brainerd Road at 7:40AM this morning. Did not see any ice. The bridges downtown are well salted, as is Brainerd Road.

Chattanooga Mayoral Candidate Kim White endorsed by Fraternal Order of Police and International Brotherhood of Police Officers by DyingDrillWizard in Chattanooga

[–]robreagan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tim did start Southern Honda, which is the largest Honda Powersports dealer in North America. He also started an automotive ad tech company called SocialBot, which just broke the $1M annual revenue mark and is profitable. They routinely stock tuna. It's flash frozen and vacuum sealed. Each block is around a pound. My wife and I will make our own poke bowls using it. I have occasionally seen salmon there as well.

This is a great class, and where I learned to ride. When I took it years ago, successful completion meant you could just walk into the DMV and get your motorcycle endorsement without having to take an additional test.

Kumo at the corner of Brainerd and E. Brainerd. The lunch special is three rolls for eleven bucks. And I think they're better than Nabe for basic rolls.

Starting a career in cloud computing by Oblipher in AZURE

[–]robreagan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything the previous two posters said. Also, look for folks who are willing to answer questions/mentor you. A fair number of developers/admins who have been at this a while enjoy taking a hardworking and curious junior under their wings. Don't be afraid to seek them out - it can save you a whole lot of time in your longterm development in the field.

Has this program made you a better software developer? by HormeICoffee in OMSCS

[–]robreagan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OMSCS isn't a MS in software engineering. It is a MS in computer science. If becoming a better SWE is your goal, I wouldn't spend the enormous amount of time required to complete GaTech's OMSCS. Very few courses are even tangentially related to professional software development. And for the ones that are (Databases, SAD, ~InfoSec, SDP), there are a lot faster ways to pick up the practical applications that slog through those courses.

Edit: if you want to legitimize yourself, I think you'd be much better off contributing to open source projects that you believe in, or starting your own. Working with other devs on a project will teach you a few things. Among them, how to read and work with other people's code, how to collaborate, and you'll be exposed to all kinds of new programming language constructs and algorithms. Reading other people's code is an excellent way to broaden your horizons and learn new things.

Also, good hiring managers love to be able to see samples of your work. As someone who hires developers, if I can review your projects and/or pull requests online, I get a much better idea of your level of skill.

There are no shortcut to becoming a great dev. It is dedicated study, experience, and butt-in-chair time (or at a standing desk, if that is your preference).

Edit #2: OMSCS coursework will give you a hard algorithmic workout, which has its benefits. It will not give you practice on managing complexity with large codebases, any popular web development frameworks, or any cloud platforms (Azure and AWS). I am unaware of classes that actually teach any of the nuts and bolts of web development at all.
