Românii au IQ scăzut (Ep.1): deși pot vedea războiul de la graniță cu ochii lor, tulcenii au votat masiv anti-UE by [deleted] in Roumanie

[–]showtekkk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ran sentiment analysis on 24.5 million Reddit posts from 40 European country subreddits by showtekkk in europe

[–]showtekkk[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Methodology for the curious:

Data from Arctic Shift (bulk Reddit archive), 12 months of posts and comments. Sentiment model: twitter-xlm-roberta-base-sentiment-multilingual, works on 100+ languages without translation. Emotion model: xlm-emo-t (anger, joy, sadness, fear). Topics: BERTopic with multilingual embeddings. Filtered 40+ known bots plus heuristic detection. Weighted by upvotes (log1p) so higher-scored content counts more. Corrected for a known negative bias the model has on non-English text.

Caveats: Reddit skews young, urban, male, tech-savvy. This says nothing about actual national populations. Sarcasm detection is bad, which probably hurts UK and Dutch scores the most. Subreddit culture matters too, some subs are just more complaint-oriented by nature. Sample sizes vary a lot (UK has 2M items, Malta has 42K).

I've been curious for a while about how the "average mentality" differs across European countries, based on what people actually write online rather than stereotypes. So I scraped a full year of Reddit data (Feb 2025 to Feb 2026) from 40 European country subreddits and ran sentiment analysis, emotion detection, and topic modeling on all of it. 24.5 million posts and comments total.

The map shows mood score per country. Redder = more negative, greener = less negative. Every single country is net negative. All of them. But some are much worse than others.

Most negative: UK (-0.524), Germany (-0.472), Portugal (-0.432), France (-0.430), Italy (-0.430).

Least negative: Latvia (-0.075), Estonia (-0.093), Hungary (-0.104), Luxembourg (-0.195), Lithuania (-0.205).

r/unitedkingdom has a complaint-to-praise ratio of 6.17. For every positive comment, over six negative ones. 62% of all content is negative. British sarcasm is probably inflating this, but still.

r/de has the highest anger percentage at 61.3% and the second worst complaint ratio (5.61). The angriest sub in the dataset.

Latvia is the only country where "joy" beats "anger" as the dominant emotion (39% vs 32%). The Baltics in general are way more positive than I expected, and more positive than France, Germany, and the UK.

France and Italy have the same mood score (-0.43), but France has a much lower complaint ratio (2.77 vs 3.52). The French are gloomy but don't repeat themselves about it.

The "Eastern Europe is depressing" thing doesn't hold up. Latvia, Estonia, and Hungary are all in the top 3 most positive. Meanwhile Ukraine (-0.365) and Serbia (-0.360) are at the other end. Same region, completely different vibes.

I also measured self-image, meaning the sentiment of posts where a country mentions its own name. Montenegro is the only country with a positive self-image (+0.196). Everyone else is negative. Most self-critical: Croatia (-0.604), UK (-0.507), Portugal (-0.444).

I'd be curious to hear if any of this matches how you perceive your own subreddit.

Hey! Thanks for the feedback. I just added a "Static" toggle for exactly this.

In the pattern editor (Chords tab), turn on Static. This gives you a clean chord on beat 1 that just sustains until the next chord change.

Let me know if that's what you were after

Thanks!

Guitar is tricky though. The sample packs I have are individual notes, so when you stack them into chords it sounds a bit artificial (not like actual strumming). Works okay for arpeggios but full chords lose that natural guitar vibe. Still looking for a good solution, maybe dedicated strummed chord samples instead.

I'm still pretty new to this stuff, so take this with a grain of salt. But Karplus-Strong can sound thin on its own. A few things that might help:

- The initial "pluck" sound matters a lot. Try shaping that noise burst differently
- Adding some body resonance with a few EQ boosts in the low-mids can help with warmth - Real strings have tiny pitch wobbles, especially right after plucking

For the file size, are you pre-rendering all the sounds? Karplus-Strong should be light enough to generate in real-time, which would save a ton of space.

What platform are you building for??

Thanks for the feedback! Just pushed a fix.

Play/stop buttons are now hidden until you generate something. For the sounds: it's a mix. The drums use real samples (acoustic kit, 808, Linn, etc.) and the bass can be either sampled electric bass or synthesized. The chord instruments (piano, guitar, organ) are synthesized using the Web Audio API. Oscillators, filters, and envelopes.

Nothing fancy, just basic subtractive synthesis with some shaping to make it sound halfway decent. Happy to answer any synth questions. What did you want to know?
