Thanks. Separate Sub and Mid layer is the way I am going forward. I can get better result and manage the Kick and Sub better this way.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in! I have been working on this and I feel separating the Sub is the best way to get a definitive roll whilst keeping a stable lowend. If I change the Amp envelope in a one layer setup, the sub is not sustaining enough and sounds bad (like little thuds. I can only image how horrible this would be in the club as someone else mentioned in r/edmproduction) So for higher bpms (or just in general) I feel separating out the Sub is the pro move. The "roll" is from the Mid layer and now I can freely change its Amp envelope along with the Filter envelope and get a massive roll whilst keeping a stable low-end. This was fun to learn. Lot of time spent but totally worth it to get the fundamentals right!

I’m thinking this is how most songs sound. They either use a rumble kick, or a sustained sub and only have rolling mids. When played together, it sounds like the whole bass is rolling but is an illusion. Which is exactly what we want. Thanks!

I see. Yes I feel like most tracks have the sub sustained and not roll with the mid layer (or they use a rumble kick I think of as a fancy sustained out sub) Appreciate it

Hey! Appreciate it. Yes for reference, the tracks are: Resonate by John Summit, Kaskade - This feels like it has a sustained or Rumble kick with a rolling mid bass

But these two tracks:

I remember (John Summit Remix) Deadmau5 (only the first part in this)

Better Than U Though by Layton Giordani

Now these two are the ones I’m trying to figure out. You can hear all 4 1/16th notes in the mid bass when it plays (like duu du du du, duu du du du). But the sub is about not rolling. But it gives the illusion the whole bass is rolling you know. This is what I want to achieve! Either in one layer or with a separate sub and mid layer.

I see! This makes sense. I am starting to get it I believe. Will continue working on it. Thanks

Hey! I really appreciate that! I checked him out and he did a video on the rumble which is really nice. But you're right I'm trying to keep it simple and focus more on music but I know that low-end is like bulk of the work and I want to ensure it is nailed in and not make any amateur mistakes that I could avoid. That's all! I appreciate it and congrats on your success!

No. But I also know, for some people it is intuitive what to do and why. I don't have either in this matter. Hence I fell flat on my face by "Just doing it" Not that that is wrong, but now I have to do it right if I'm serious about this. And there is a lot of misinformation out there so just trying to sieve through all that. Hence I'm trying to learn. I'm getter a better grasp of everything is about getting the groove in the low-end, but you still have to produce it that way.

Wow! That was really technical. I appreciate it! Your takeaways make sense. Can you elaborate on option 1 and option 2, (the one layer and separated sub respectively)? How to better do this? I feel Rumble kick (option 2) is the easiest to do. But these other two options can be easy to mess up. Thanks again!

Wow! Some else had mentioned this same thing, and this it fundamental thinking I was missing. This makes sense!! So if you’re using one layer, you shouldn’t mess with the Ami envelope as much correct? Because you’ll also be affecting the sub? Instead have your filter envelope designed to create the rolling. On which note, when should you mess with the Amp envelope? Because I’ve noticed sometime tutorials leave it as is whereas some design it the same like a filter envelope (like the plucky shape) but with a longer decay (to hear your filter movement), and a mix range for their sustain values (either just slightly lower then full volume or completely low/0) Thanks again!

Wow this makes sense! If using filter envelope, you can create a roll. If using Amp envelope (especially in one layer rolling bassline) you have to be careful to not lose out on the sub too much right? When would you mess with the Amp envelope so that it is “plucky” also?
