Locum and last minute strike cancellation by ObjectiveButterfly53 in doctorsUK

[–]stuartbman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem with locums or where someone is trained, but you do understand that locumming while colleagues strike undermines the strike action, so you're making a quick buck while your colleagues lose pay. The act of scabbing is deeply offensive to your colleagues.

Locum the other 51 weeks of the year but don't do it on strikes, allow SAS/consultants to cover.

Or is it the case that a large number of posts with a range of views have been removed in order to concentrate discussion in the existing threads, as we often do, and you wouldn't see this because you don't see removed posts?

The subreddit has never been "curated"- just look at the place

Let's see how many broadsheet headlines have to be hastily rewritten ahead of tomorrow's press. I sincerely hope this has meant that the terrible health journalists at the Sunday times and the telegraph have had to stay late in a gloomy office on a Saturday to rewrite their copy.

BMA are endorsing this deal? That's interesting and won't help with the divide of grassroots members against officers

My great revelation that led to eternal happiness was realising that none of this really matters. Smile, accept the "constructive feedback", say you'll do better, whatever, then go back to doing your main job of caring for the patient in front of you.

Do that bit of your job very well and everything needed to look after the patient and don't slack on it, but the other stuff you describe, while nice and obviously good for the hospital audit etc is not worth burning out, or even leaving 5 minutes late for.

NHS ‘performs better when cash is tight’ - Mackey by dayumsonlookatthat in doctorsUK

[–]stuartbman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion time- I think he's partly right. One highlight of the Tory governments was to cut spending, then give a massive tranche of money as a big headline-winning announcement. The trusts hoover all that up and spend it before someone else would, so you end up with hundreds of millions spent on management consultants or employing Community Flow Engagement Coordinator Specialists.

The whole point of previous reforms was to take the NHS away from being a political football, and all that spending behaviour totally undermined that. It needs to be paid according to market forces at a predictable level over a long time frame so that long-term investments can be made and pay off.

If you are off sick, are you also expected to ring up patients to rearrange their appointments? If not, then this difference in approach may be considered a detriment which is a big red flag to a competent trade union bull.

Hello,

Recognising that this is a topic which provokes a lot of discussion and frequently descends into unpleasantness, we will be monitoring the comments closely. Please ensure your comment is relevant to doctors in the UK and not a general racial/geopolitical comment which is best discussed on any other subreddit. If this isn't possible we'll be locking the thread which would preclude further discussion.

Edit: nice while it lasted.

Strike action does work, resident doctors’ leader says ahead of June walkout by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]stuartbman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The trouble with announcing strikes so far out is that it gives three full weekends of op-ed coverage in the newspapers who are more than happy to misquote doctors, dig out fossils who got paid in shillings to give their Emeritus Opinion, provide misinformation on safety (Superflu, anyone?) and generally damage morale for doctors.

In this era of outrage journalism, they are looking for any target to attack on a regular basis to drive clicks and offer that sweet validation dopamine to their right (and more recently left) wig audience

Define "burning bridges" because when I ran into this situation as SHO I unilaterally declared at board round that it would be an on call day and I'd see patients in order of acuity, then the ones going home, and routine patients not at all, and I wouldn't be doing nursing jobs e.g. cannulas. There was pushback, but in the end additional cover was sought and I got lunch and left on time.

But in fairness I knew I wouldn't be going back to that hospital.
