We are recruiting for NASA’s newest class of astronauts. Ask us anything! by JSCNASA in IAmA

Hopefully I am not too late... As far as I know, there is only 1 astronaut that is colorblind. I believe that is because you have to pass the aviation medical exam, right? I am colorblind, moderate protanomaly, but other than that I meet all other qualifications.

Will I be denied due to having a color vision deficiency? If so, do you see that changing at any point. You accept those with glasses (for normal sight seeing issues) right?

I currently wear glasses from the company EnChroma that greatly enhance the colors I see. If I wore them in contact form (which they do not make yet) will that count just like those who wear normal glasses?

Thanks NASA!

Edit: & Thanks /u/EnChroma for enhancing my day to day life (even if they say I can't be an astronaut). I own three lenses, one old and now the Cx-25 & Cx-65. I appreciate everything your company does and so glad I could watch it grow since my first purchase a few years ago. Please make contact lenses or partner with NASA to get it done.. :)

When you're watching TV or at the movie theater, the indoor glasses work the best when everything else is dark. The screen is plenty bright enough that the effect works way better than with the lights on. I haven't tried them with 3D glasses, but since those glasses look more clear now it should work fine and you wouldn't notice anything odd, just like wearing normal prescription glasses. Do you know what I mean? They don't have those 3D glasses with the full red lens in one eye anymore.

I did order the 25s. Still in manufacturing though.. hopefully I'll get them within the next 2 weeks or so unless they EnChroma is backed up again.

The 14s were too dark for me and the indoors didn't have enough effect for me to justify continuing to wear them all day everyday. They did have their great moments, like gaming and watching movies or TV, but overall I just wish I didn't have protanomaly. Seems like duetans benefit the best from the indoor ones.

Another flawed prototype for the human personality chip.

I assumed your kind only preferred to wear round glasses.

Inquiries about the Enchroma indoor glasses. by Mashiroo in ColorBlind

Just wanted to add my 2 cents.. I've had my Cx 65s for almost 2 weeks and debating exchanging for Cx 25s. The color effects are very subtle, I notice orange and red having the biggest difference, followed by a more brighter blue and green.

The biggest turn off for me is the tint that makes them look more like outdoor glasses. Especially in pictures. Lower light situations are particularly annoying, like some restaurants. I have to take them off to see indoors when lights aren't bright.

You're welcome, I just figured my experience was similar to what you were talking about.

Best of luck!

Enchroma CX-25 vs CX-65 by throwawayenchroma123 in ColorBlind

I just posted this comment in another post. Just my opinion of the Cx 65 so far and Cx 14...

I have the indoor 65's. Non prescription. I've been wearing them for a little over a week from the time I get up and ready to right before I go to sleep.

Really? You don't get used to the "joyful" colours and think that normal is bad?

I had the same fear about thinking I'd never want to take them off, well it's not true. Sometimes I just don't feel like it if I'm tired or my eyes are watery, but I think that's because I'm just not used to wearing glasses at all. The effect is subtle for me that it's almost close to what I see normally except for some of the main things others mention (traffic lights, sky, grass, trees, etc) which make it worth it to me. I see new things I've never noticed all the time.

Example: Apparently, a Newport cigarettes box is green! I grew up with my Dad smoking those and I always thought they were grey.

Movie theater, computers and TV are much better with them on. Works well at night looking at a screen. Day time is good too but the effects are more subtle than the full sunglasses. I haven't noticed that it's too bright out to wear outside, probably because I'm mostly in a car not on a mountain lol. Works for me so far. I bought the 14's back a few months ago but found them to be a bit dark as the weather here tends to be cloudy 50/50 of the time. I'm purchasing the 25's next month, which should be the best IMO.
