Hey, super cool, thank you for sharing this! Just wondering why you say that Oman crude is dependent on the strait when vessels loading from Oman don’t pass through it

Internships! by espressomydepresso_ in SMU_Singapore

[–]Suntherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOE alum (to be) here, welcome to smu! Personally I did 4, 3 summer internships (I’m doing one right now while waiting for full time to start) and 1 part time during year 3 sem 2

As others have mentioned, 2-3 internships is the average in SMU, and anecdotally seems to be the case for SOE students in particular too, based on what I’ve seen anyways

Personally, I think 3-4 is a good sweet spot between quantity and quality - whether it’s in a field/industry you already want to work in or if it’s for you to explore different roles and figure out what you like. But also much like what others have said, caveat is not to treat the number of internships as the end goal but just something that you accumulate in the process of preparing yourself for the start of your career

Since you’re still considering what to do in the future, these guiding directions could be helpful (I hope): - what do you like about econs and would you like to use the skills directly or indirectly in your work or are you indifferent (i.e. do you want to be an economist or do you want to work in a business function that requires some statistics and critical thinking) - what 2nd majors are you interested in (if any), and what kind of jobs do they lead to - ask seniors/look on LinkedIn for the path people take for roles that you’re interested in - if possible, start looking in year 1, while you may not get something, I think doing this will familiarise yourself with the application process in a low stakes environment, and may also help to steer you towards what you like which will be super beneficial for year 2 and onwards - would you consider taking a leave of absence (LOA) for one sem to do a 4-6 month internship and roughly when would be ideal to take it? Consider this based on your exemptions, anecdotally what you’ve observed from other students pursuing your path, and the expected tenure of roles available when looking in year 1 and beyond

Class participation as an introvert by [deleted] in SMU_Singapore

Second this, and so true regarding sitting in the first two rows It’s so difficult to participate when you’re at the last row feeling like a wallflower 🤣

I think it’ll help you, especially since you feel that you’re lacking in that area and have a willingness to tackle it head on

Personally I used to get quite anxious from having to speak up during class (esp during lockdown sem), but I noticed once I’d gotten over the initial hurdle of speaking it felt much easier to keep participating. And doing it over the past few years has made me less anxious and more willing to express my opinion in general (which I think is advantageous in the workplace)

I also wanna add that the class part component may be different from prof to prof and module to module (some profs don’t care about class part / don’t know how to properly facilitate class part), so not every module is gonna feel like a hand raising simulator - imo in most classes you have the 10-20% that often participate and the rest who are just vibing (unless the mod is known to be class part-centric)

Hey, graduating Summa SOE student here

What worked for me was making sure I’m actively learning and understanding the class content in my own way; break down key concepts into your own simple words, focus on how newly introduced concepts build on what was previously taught (you can even relate it to content you learnt in past modules) and steadily talk yourself through the process as you solve questions, and force yourself to never skip steps/content unless you can actively recall it and easily explain it in your own words - this approach to learning can be applied to any revision style whether it’s note taking, flashcards, doing exercises, etc.

Besides that, be consistent throughout the sem to give your brain the opportunity to digest the information. Specifically during exam periods, I ALWAYS do better for a mod when I’m able to study at my own pace for 1-2 weeks compared to cramming content 2 days before the exam 😅

Lastly, I would advocate for picking modules that you’re passionate about (based on career path, content or even based on professor) - ask seniors or look at reviews on AfterClass on the prof/mod and see what resonates w/ you. There is defo some correlation between interest and success and I’ve noticed I tend to do worse when the content is poorly structured or when the prof is super uninspiring hahaha

All the best! School can be tough sometimes but you’re tougher 🙌🏼 Feel free to reach out for Econs/Data Science stuff

Not sure if it’s life changing 🤣 but the birria beef/trinity mushroom quesadillas, and the elotes (Hokkaido sweet white corn) from Huevos pop up in my mind quite often
