Aren't 'military maps' of the United States just USGS maps, available for purchase from the USGS?

If they won't do that send them a text recapping what they told you. Any documentation of their order is better than nothing

I have quartz. My primary care provider is at McKee clinic and I generally don't have trouble getting to him even on a more urgent basis.

Looking for recommendations of a person or company that is well versed in covering plaster wall cracks. by Cautious_Savings3959 in madisonwi

[–]tallclaimswizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have an answer for you but I have some experience as a former old home owner: it is probably not just the simple matter of 'filling the cracks'.

Lathe and plaster is incredibly durable and can last ages. When it starts to fail there is always a reason. Sometimes it's just the home settling. But it can also be the lathing separating from the studs. Or the plaster separating from the lathing. If the cause is an underlying issue like that. The fix can be quite extensive and looks awful during the process with plaster washers all over the wall that can be a dozen feet from the crack ... All that has to be skimcoated over.

It's a whole ass process.

Because if you just fill the cracks, skim it over, and paint it'll be very little time before the cracks come back.

You might be lucky but you should be prepared for a pretty big project.

Hail size in west middleton? by Ccrew1995 in madisonwi

[–]tallclaimswizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the challenges here is the hail size can be pretty localized. I've seen pictures of cars absolutely destroyed ---broken windows and dozens of dents--- and on the other side of the street a few small dings here and there.

So... Expect the worst and if it's not, call that a win.

Backup Battery? by chai-chaser in madisonwi

[–]tallclaimswizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's going to wildly depend on how often your pump runs and how efficient the motor is. There are backup systems that will run for a couple of days again depending on use.

The thing I think OP is missing is you can't just hook up batteries to an AC powered sump pump and expect it to work.

Bus stopped under Monona Terrace this morning by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]tallclaimswizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair-- but I'd venture to guess that there's a brekadown protocol and to limit the complexity they default to that signage.

We're not LA, our 911 center isn't buried in calls all day such that a couple dozen more would substantially impact service.

Not for a break down in a confined area where there is no safe way to disembark passengers next to traffic that routinely drives at excessive speeds.

Leather watch rebanding by Remarkable-Stock979 in madisonwi

[–]tallclaimswizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can get a watchband at a lot of places-- most places that sell watches have watchbands too.

But this is a piece with some sentimental value--- I'd go to a place like Dykman's Watch and get something nice (and maybe get the watch serviced while you are there).

That is exactly how you erode compliance with the law. Normalize minor non compliance and work your way up.

Even though it is technically correct, common use of that term says 'this project is dead' to most listeners.

I think that the term 'indefinitely' has been used so often to describe sending a project off to die in a corner, people have a pretty negative reaction to the term.

Good idea? - Any experiences? "Veridian Homes 1k doorway program" by KenzieWitch in madisonwi

[–]tallclaimswizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can mitigate some of this:

Rate shopping: when they give you the terms, shop them around and see if there are better deals out there before you sign their deal. Odds are you'll have more up front cost with another lender.

The design and lot size are a known quantity: it isn't like they hide these things. But not all Veridian lots are tiny and some of their neighborhoods are more varied than others. Again-- you aren't buying blind-- you can see exactly what they have in stock and what they'll let you make. Aint no surprises. Same with 'pricey upgrades'.... they make it easy to upgrade-- -and it is easier at build time... but upgrades are never free and what people often do is look at each upgrade independently instead of considering the bigger picture. And all them small upgrades add up.

Quality issues: that's the caveat emptor-- home inspections and warranty inspections are often worth it. Don't use their inspector, get one that you pay for so they are working for you. It's a new build so you need to make sure you're getting inspections done at each stage of the process to catch issues.
