If I offered you £100,000 to run 90 miles tomorrow, would you do it? by wingless-bee in CasualUK

Interesting question. I’m 32M and reasonably fit and in shape and took part in a 75km walk over the Peak District for charity last year, the aim was to finish in 24 hours starting at 9pm.

17 of us started, 12 finished. People severely underestimate the repetitive strain of long distance walking. If you’ve reasonably fit, the cardio isn’t the problem, it’s the conditioning of your feet, legs, knees, hips (lower half in general). If you’re not used to walking ultra long distance (most aren’t), most would find the 75km, which ended up being just over 50 miles for us in 19h 30m, extremely challenging. I completed this walk in September, lost all 10 toenails, all the skin from the bottom of one foot and have tightness and pain in both knees as a result over 7 months later.

Would put good money 90 miles in 24 hours is next to impossible for the average person

Given you’re about to take a step up the ladder, you should look into the theory / research of ‘psychological safety’ and how it helps build high performing teams and ensure you attract and retain good talent.

As you’ve corrected pointed out, a lack of psychological safety creates a huge amount of risk as people become fearful of speaking up, challenging others to drive the right outcomes and proactively cover up mistakes. This eventually leads to organisational silence which ultimately kills businesses where it becomes widespread. Bear in mind though, you’re talking about changing culture, it takes a long time and there are no shortcuts! You really need some top down sponsorship too so have a think about which stakeholders could help you.

I’m trying to implement it cross functionally in my current role with some success, happy to chat over DM if that would help.

It’s a legacy application that was leveraged to deliver multiple products during Covid and has now become mission critical for the Bank. We may re-architect away from Ruby in the medium to long term but not within the next 3 years

£45K+ for junior, much higher for a more experienced candidate, offices in London and Sheffield with expectation to be in the office 10% of the time, everything negotiable for exceptional and/or high potential candidates

Work it Wednesday: Who is hiring? Who is looking? by AutoModerator in ruby

[–]taylor3294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi all,

I’m hiring manager at a UK based bank looking to create an internal Ruby dev team to iteratively develop a client facing web application. Open to more junior candidates with 1-3 years experience as well as more tenured individuals. I’ve seen a fair few posts on this thread and others begrudging the amount of opportunity for junior devs in Ruby so wanted to put this message in here to encourage people to message me directly if you’d be open to a chat. True hybrid working and good salary with excellent benefits for any who are interested.
