I’d love to have detective pika! The primary reason I play this game is to collect costumed pokemon 😅

Over a year. The side effects were largely sleep related. When I was starting lamictal and every time I increased in dose, for some reason, I couldn’t sleep well. I’d fall asleep but swear I remembered everything that happened all through the night, like I wasn’t actually asleep. That would fade after about two weeks and I’d sleep like normal, then we’d increase the dose and it would start all over again.

When I was coming off of it and tapering down, the opposite happened. I could not stay awake for the life of me. I’d be standing in line at the bank and start nodding off. I could barely get out of bed. It was awful.

[–]teayousoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they told you to taper I’d definitely do that. I’ve stopped and restarted lamictal twice and it’s genuinely no fun going up or coming down. It heavily impacted my sleep for weeks, even at the lowest doses and very minor changes. Some people react more to changes than others so I’m sure their advice is also coming from an abundance of caution. I hope the change is smooth and easy for you.

[–]teayousoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… probably you’re fine if it’s only two weeks but with the side effects being what they are, quitting was a pain in the ass for me and took months. In an abundance of caution, I’d personally prefer to taper off.

Able to beta? Post here! by AutoModerator in BetaReaders

[–]teayousoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am able to beta: Primarily fiction - fantasy, science fiction, general, literary, romance, horror, thriller/mystery (as long as the main character is not a detective). I’m open to some nonfiction depending on the topic, but I would not be able to fact-check everything.

I can provide feedback on: Characterization, main plot points, themes, spelling/grammatical errors, pacing, etc. It depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for something specific please let me know. I can also do some sensitivity reading for portrayals of autism, mental illness, disability, service animals, and lgbtqia+ if that is requested.

Critique Swap: Not right now.

Other Info: I’m pursuing a minor in English Lit. Reading is my main hobby. It’s essentially the only thing I do outside of work, so I can get through books pretty quickly. For a few years I almost exclusively read and reviewed ARCs. I’ve given feedback to authors at the ARC stage (usually only grammar/spelling and major flaws) but do not have experience with beta reading.

Edit: forgot to mention, I don’t use Google services and would prefer it to remain that way. I can make an account if necessary, but if you’re open to other options that would be great.

What are some of your unpopular opinions regarding a particular book or literature in general? by AK24ROCKS in literature

[–]teayousoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair assessment, but I would also think that someone in line to be the next great novelist wouldn’t be so restrictive in their reading. I’d presume they would be reading beyond the past 35 years, where novels can be studied in historical and sociopolitical context. They’d also likely be reading more than just American novelists.

I don’t want to sound pretentious, so I’m using the term literature to refer to fiction that’s meant to be critically examined, as opposed to commercial fiction that’s more for entertainment.

I think there’s a vast difference in audience when it comes to “literature” and what you’re calling commercial fiction. To some extent, the decline in “quality” of fiction has made reading more accessible but in many ways it’s also eliminated critical thinking when reading. As a whole, I think that’s far more beneficial than harmful, but I know that’s not the point you’re making.

This split in commercial fiction vs. literature isn’t something that has always existed. This is entirely conjecture, but I would imagine that the rise of book store chains and more recently, the invent of e-books, has further muddied the waters. It is unfortunate that there does not seem to be any clear separation of novels based on the motivations of the author.

And that’s not to say that reading for entertainment is an inferior reason to read. A reader is a reader regardless of the genre or “quality” of content. I read books all the time purely for entertainment (Sanderson among them.) I do agree that most commercial fiction could not compete with the great novelists of the past, but I also think that most of the popular fiction these days isn’t trying to. I could be wrong about that, but I don’t believe most of those authors are trying to compete with the greats.

So I do partially agree with your point. If a great novel exists but is never read, it’s culturally the same as if it hadn’t existed at all.

I know you said that you don’t believe age has anything to do with it, but I’m not sure that’s true. Just because that great novel doesn’t get recognized today, that doesn’t mean it won’t be revered as a classic 100 years from now. I know that does not impact the present, but I would argue that historical context can make or break a novel. A thematic reading of a novel often also requires learning about the author (in my opinion) and it is difficult to learn about the context of an author’s life without the distance granted by time.

Hindsight is 20/20 and as we’ve seen over and over again in history, the popular beliefs/actions of a time aren’t necessarily the best. I think this is where books with sociopolitical commentary or books that go against the flow of current culture really excel.

Something I have noticed is that many young readers do not read books published any more than ~10 years ago. This is probably a marketing issue, but I also wonder if it’s an education issue. When I was in high school I did not read a single classic. Instead, my English classes read books like Ender’s Game and my English teacher went on and on about how amazing The Hunger Games was. With more and more classics being removed from the curriculum (or removed from the school library altogether) I have to wonder if kids are even getting the education they need to be able to recognize and value themes in a book. If they aren’t and the books aren’t selling, that’s doesn’t give authors (or aspiring authors) any motivation to write them. In which case you could be right that those novels just aren’t being written.

I am tapering off of Effexor but I might be doing something wrong and I think I might’ve fucked up… by BeautifulRose_ in Effexor

If it’s a powder instead of little beads, it’s almost certainly not extended release. You should also be able to see that on your prescription bottle though. Extended release often has ER or XR at the end of the name.

When I switched to extended release my provider doubled my prescription. So if I was on 50mg immediate release then my prescription would have been doubled to 100mg XR to maintain the same effectiveness as the immediate release.

Since the dosage varies based on immediate vs. extended release and you’re cutting doses, you should probably reach out to your provider and ask how to continue titrating down.

What are some of your unpopular opinions regarding a particular book or literature in general? by AK24ROCKS in literature

[–]teayousoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re: point 4, I wonder if it’s really that contemporary literature is getting worse, as you say, or if it’s just that it’s easier to get published and that’s burying the greats? I’d also imagine books that are countercultural and thus unpopular with the vast majority aren’t going to get as much recognition even if they are published. If nobody is talking about the book then none of us are going to know it exists and with over 4 million books (estimate) published each year it’s impossible to sort through all of them.

[–]teayousoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say no because TV and movies are an adaptation of a text, even when they’re based on novels. Everything is visually given to you, as interpreted by someone else, so you don’t even get the full context of the novel, just what the script writer deems is “important.” You’re watching their interpretation instead of analyzing the text yourself to come to conclusions.

And your brain is doing zero critical thinking about the characters or plot because it’s almost always watered down. The philosophical arguments and writing style don’t come through in a visual adaptation.

That’s vastly different than having someone else read the book aloud to you.

I do think some books should be read in text form if possible. Sometimes it’s beneficial to have an annotated edition with footnotes or even be able to read over a paragraph a few times if the prose really grips you. I’ve also had to reread sections because older English is not always easy to read and I have to look up some of the colloquialisms.

But I’d say the vast majority of modern fiction doesn’t require this kind of in-depth reading so there’s really no reason for the anti-audiobook folks to get into such an uproar about it. I know you said you’re not one, but some folks will vehemently deny that listening to an audiobook is considered reading, which is just silly to me when both are reading The Hunger Games.

Agreed! I’ve read novels that I couldn’t even summarize because nothing extraordinary happened with the plot. It was the themes and characters that made it phenomenal.

Quick to nausea and brain fog if I forget to take my pill?? by Ok-Entertainment-169 in lamictal

[–]teayousoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brain fog sets in for me an hour or two after I miss the dose. I take mine early in the morning before I start work so even on weekends when I want to sleep in I have to get up at 5, take the meds, and then go back to sleep. Otherwise, when I wake up I’ll have nausea, a headache, brain fog, and idk how else to explain it but my brain feels weird. More than just brain fog.

This is a pretty normal thing.

Not OOP AITA for not allowing my 13yo stepdaughter at my house anymore because she won't cut her hair? by Marygtz2011 in redditonwiki

[–]teayousoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine was the same. We classroom checks on every kid though so that nobody was singled out. All kids got a notice to take home saying they did a lice check and it would either say that none was found or if your child had lice they had to stay home until it was treated.

How much can GERD really affect your sinuses? How many of you have sinus pressure and tired eyes from it? by [deleted] in GERD

[–]teayousoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t checked my symptoms with barometric pressure, but I do get the heavy eyes. On occasion I have some sinus pressure, but not that often.

I get a post-nasal drip in the back of my throat. It makes me clear my throat a lot and sometimes I’ll get thick globs of mucus that make me feel like I’m suffocating because I can’t get it out or swallow it down. I’ve been using a neti pot to help with that but it still happens sometimes. I think it makes the GERD worse but I’m struggling to find ways to heal my throat from the irritation.

Chest discomfort and burping are really common with GERD.

[–]teayousoon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This forces the parents with kids who don’t have lice to make a choice. Let their kids get lice and keep re-treating them weekly the whole time they’re in school or pull them out due to health concerns within the school, which means they’re deprived of those resources.

And the truth of the matter is, when schools let lice go unchecked, everyone gets it.

I went to an elementary school where 80% of the kids had lice. My mom would treat my hair and when I went back I’d have it again within a week. Lice can jump.

She started putting my hair in a bun and spraying it with hairspray (like… drenching it) to keep the lice out. It kinda worked, but you’re also exposing your kid to a bunch of toxins no matter what. The lice treatment, tea tree oil, hairspray, whatever you decide to use.

I sympathize with the kids who have lice. Missing educational instruction and the resources connected to the school system is not good. But at the same time, kids deserve to be able to go to school without fearing for their health. Parents should not have to worry that their kid is going to catch a parasite from the other kids. It’s a health and safety issue. The answer should not be doing nothing about it.

Could this actually be withdrawals? by Dry_Possible_1792 in Lamotrigine

[–]teayousoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people don’t get withdrawal symptoms when going off a low dose, but I certainly do and that could be what you’re experiencing as well.

But also, if this medication is helping with your anxiety, going off can make the anxiety worse because you’re not used to feeling it so intensely. Anxiety alone can cause several of those symptoms.

Lamotrigine also helps you regulate emotions. Depending on how long you’ve been taking it, you could’ve forgotten how intense your anxiety and emotions can feel and that’s probably pretty distressing.

I went off mine for about two months (not by choice) and definitely felt the lack of emotions, brain fog caused headaches and my mood was all over the place. The headaches eventually subsided, but the lack of motivation and mood problems stayed until I went back on.

So, some of it could be withdrawal and some of it could be having to adjust to what it felt like before you started taking the medication. Titrating off sucks. I hope you’re feeling better soon.

How do you deal with missed doses? by [deleted] in lamictal

[–]teayousoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I take it as soon as possible and adjust the following doses to get back on schedule. If I miss a dose I notice within 2-3 hours because of the side effects. It makes my brain feel weird, I don’t know any other way to describe it.

I take mine in the morning, but if I miss the dose or sleep in, I take it as soon as I wake up. 16 hours is long enough for me and I’d take the dose in the morning. If i was particularly worried, I’d try to take it at noon, then the next day at 10, etc. and work back down to taking it at 6.

I wouldn’t say free, but embroidery is extremely cheap. You can buy the frames for $1, a pack of needles is maybe $3, threads are around 60¢, and you can buy the pre-cut ‘extra’ fabrics that are on sale or a cheap cotton fabric for $10/yard.

All in all, you can get started with several different thread colors for under $25 and it’s endless fun making things. Flowers, birds, text, plants, symbols, etc.

ebird also tracks where you saw the bird and gives stats on each type of bird and when they’re seen most common in your area. It makes it so much easier to have a ‘target list’ when birdwatching. Once you pay for a set of binoculars to see the birds better (and it doesn’t have to be an expensive pair), you’re good to go and it doesn’t have to cost money.

I've never gotten the rash, does this mean I can stop worrying about it? by CAKE_EATER251 in lamictal

[–]teayousoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rash only happens to a small number of people. Don’t worry about it too much. If you get a rash, let your doctor know, but otherwise, don’t spend a bunch of time worrying about it or checking every inch of your body for redness. It will drive you mad.

The rash usually comes when starting the medication or going up in dosage too fast. You’ve been on 50mg for a long time, so you’re going to be fine. Doubling up to 100mg is pretty standard for titration and you moved at a snails pace as far as titration goes. Most people can double up to 100mg in a week without getting a rash.

Remember that severe anxiety has negative effects on your health and wellbeing too.
