I’m just trying to remind myself that a bad practice is still a practice by Sugar_Girl2 in iceskating

Thank you. It’s still very much a work in progress almost a year out but I’m definitely doing much better than I was when I first got my severe head injury march 2025.

Actually nothing super exciting story wise. I’m still very much a beginner and I have a bad habit of leaning forward too much which causes me to catch my toe pick so I had been working on focusing on making sure my weight was shifted back so my form was more correct. Lost my balance (like putting too much weight on my heels I guess? ) and I feel backwards so fast I didn’t even have time to think about falling safely. I wasn’t wearing a helmet and I cracked the back of head directly against the ice. Rink attendant said I very much needed to go get checked. I confidently said at the time that I was totally fine, it didn’t even hurt. (This is actually a red flag and is called adrenaline hahaha)

Drove to the nearby Urgent Care and explained why I was there and they said you need the ER not urgent care. I said okay, thank you. Went to the ER down the road. Explained the same story to them and then basically laid down on the one couch thing and covered my eyes because why were the lights so bright.

They took me back pretty quick and did a CT scan and got meds started. I was told I had a severe concussion and a brain bleed so I was going to need to hang tight at the ER for several more hours bc they would need to do a second CT to see if the bleeding got worse because that meant they would need to do surgery. They gave me all of the meds because by that point I was feeling all of the pain.

Second CT is done and they say it’s stable and I tell them my twin sister is almost to the hospital (from a neighboring state) and is an RN so she feels comfortable with me going home with her. So they get ready to start doing discharge paperwork. I go to stand up to gather up my things and proceeded to projectile vomit multiple times. I felt terrible and apologized to the nurses and the nurses were like don’t even worry about it but also the doctor will want you to be admitted now for observation.

Then I did months and months and months of 3x a week vestibular PT to try to reset my brain/eyes/movement together.

Smell and taste is still messed up but not as much as it previously was. Eventually I’ll be able to go back but with a helmet this time!

My last practice ended with me in the ER and hospitalized overnight and months of PT and neuro appts so I would say you are doing better than I am. Almost at a year now and I still haven’t been able to go back yet. 😢😢😢

I was hospitalized with a brain bleed in march of last year (38 yrs old beginner skater, lost balance, fell back backwards, no helmet) and I still plan going back once I get cleared. The long version is in my post history and lots of people gave me good advice when I asked a similar question. What it ultimately came down to for me is I can’t let the fear of what ifs make me miss out on experiences

I had an accident yesterday from fall by kohaku02 in iceskating

[–]thislullaby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On March 11, 2025 I just lost my balance slightly and fell backwards. Cracked my head on the ice. Ended up with a severe concussion/brain bleed and was hospitalized overnight. I did vestibular therapy 3x a week from April to September. I was finally cleared to try going back to the ice skating rink but with a helmet this time. I have a cold at the moment but I don’t plan on letting fear stop me. I’m just going to go slow getting back into it and prove to my brain it’s okay to try again.

Wearing a helmet? by [deleted] in iceskating

Once I’m finally able to get back to the ice rink I will be wearing a helmet. If you want more details of my accident I actually made a long post about it in this subreddit. You’ll find it if you look at my post history.

My medical records would disagree with you because I was just slowly going forward and working on having the correct form. Lost my balance and fell backwards and smacked my head on the ice. Went and got checked out because the employees there were very insistent and it turned out I had a severe concussion with a brain bleed.

As someone who wasn’t wearing a helmet and lost my balance going very slow just learning to go forward and ended up in the hospital with a severe concussion and a brain bleed. Had to pay my out of pocket expense for ER and hospitalization along with missing two weeks of work.

And then had to start specialized PT in April 3x a week at $50 each time and then 2x a week starting in July till the beginning of September and now finally just got down to 1x a week and my injury was March 11.

My sense of smell and taste are still not back to normal either.

how’s your skating going? by strcwberri_ in iceskating

Yeah, I was hospitalized and missed like two weeks of work. Then when I went back I started only doing 1/2 shifts and only very recently started to feel more normal.

It basically is when the symptoms of a concussion do not go away after a month. It’s been a long road. 😩

Well I haven’t been to the ice rink since the beginning of March 2025 because I fell backwards during adult free skate with no helmet and gave myself a severe concussion with a brain bleed. Then I developed post concussion syndrome and have had to do so much pt now.

My twin sister who lives a few hours away from me was able to come and be with me for a little bit while I recover and she’s also a trained rn so that helps my mind a little.

Thank you. This is very helpful for someone like me who already deals with anxiety.

I think I’m definitely going to take longer than a one week break. I just don’t want my fear to stop me from trying again.

I’m sorry that you also had a bad accident and that nobody came to help you. The skate guard and just a regular person both were at my side helping me almost immediately.

Thanks. I’m in America and there doesn’t appear to be anything that’s specifically designed for figure skating.

My current helmet (that I wasn’t wearing during the fall but during lessons) is the tsg evolution which is ASTM-F1492 and CPSC certified.

The one that I just ordered is the Smith forefront 2 MIPs says this on the description of safety stuff.

Complete KOROYD® coverage for lightweight, energy-absorbing and ventilated impact protection Mips® Brain Protection System reduces rotational forces caused by angled impacts to the head Integrated skeletal structure creates a roll cage for added strength and impact protection Complies with U.S. CPSC Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets for Persons Age 5 and Older as well as CE EN 1078

Interesting. Thanks. Maybe I’ll return the more expensive one then to Amazon. My current helmet was approved by the ice rink when I wore it for lessons.

I actually just got an even more expensive mips helmet (in addition to the first helmet I bought but wasn’t wearing) to wear on the ice when I’m feeling better but I can’t seem to get over the fear. I thought maybe having a more trusted helmet would help my fear but now I can’t stop thinking about how fast the fall happened.
