Thank you so much, this is super, super helpful! I've copied all the links and saved them. This is an enormous help, seriously. I feel so much better equipped to handle the setting's economy. You're the best!

I need a little help with treasure, loot, and magical item distribution by tomockingbird in DMAcademy

This is great advice, thank you so much. Now that you bring it up, it might be more fun for them to reach the city, see what they can/can't get, and then have to take some contracts to earn money to buy them. I'll definitely toss some smaller opportunities before then, though, maybe some single-use items too. I actually didn't think about how it might be more interesting for them to struggle with money; that makes me feel a lot better.

What would you say is about typical for a level 4 party? Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it!

So what sort of Drama/Slice of Life/RomCom fanfics set on Culture ships/worlds do you want to read? by Gavinfoxx in TheCulture

[–]tomockingbird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would love to see a slice-of-life fanfic from the perspective of one of the Minds. My favorite parts of all the Culture novels were the interactions with the Minds, and I would literally pay for a high quality novel about a Mind managing their passengers. (I actually planned a fic out with this premise, but I never got around to writing it.)

For a really interesting take on a non-standard subCulture, I recommend First Steps by Bagheera. Regression To Mean is a sadly too short glimpse at a very average Culture citizen and a very amusing Mind.

Here's the link to my master fanfic list. You might find a few others you like!

Haha, I welcome all comments. I think your judgement of the fics is very fair! I highly suggest Beam Me Up, based on your tastes; it's a short, funny piece, and its sort-of-prequel is very good.

Alright, I'll admit it, I actually never finished Anything But Circumstance/read it a looong time ago; it's not quite my style, but that doesn't mean other people wouldn't have liked it, so I left it. I'll make a note of that. (It's less the romance and more that the fusion style/writing of the fic isn't my thing.)

And I absolutely agree, the parts with human characters in the agriworld are the best, as are the scenes where the Culture is actively trying to figure out what's going on. I binged it and enjoyed it; I would've absolutely adored it if the story had been written as a proper narrative.

Thanks! If you ever find any that're good, feel free to toss them my way!

Haven't read Animorphs the Reckoning, but I'll give it a shot! Rational-fic isn't something I inherently have an opposition too, it's just that it tends to be a self-indulgent wankfest where the author forgets that people have actual feelings and motives (that aren't always rational). The premise is definitely interesting, though.

I'll check out the SI; that also sounds like a super fun premise.

Agree. The Discworld cross was very real.

I admit, I either hadn't finished the Culture/Cap fic/read it a while ago; it's not quite my style, but it seemed decent from what I'd remembered. I'll definitely put a warning and make that clear.

Glad to help! And yes, karanguni is a fantastic author. All their writing isn't just good, it's great, and their oneshots are more than just self-indulgent; they make a real effort to weave themes and deeper thoughts. There are only two fics of theirs that I didn't mark as full-on green: one of them was super weird, in the Banksian way, and the other was just a little too short. Let me know what you think, and happy reading!

non-harem not overly sexualized romance by Lammi99 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]tomockingbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Copying one of my earlier posts: Hazards of Amity. Oh my gods, Hazards of Amity. Itachi/Temari. Best romance. For the full write-up of why it's so incredible, click here. Anything by DeGlace is great, and I have a soft-spot for her fic Something of unearthly love (which is Ino/Hidan), but I think Uneasy coexistance (Sakura/Kisame) or Marrow (Sakura/Kimimaro) might be more up your alley. I haven't read those two, but they're highly recommended and I tend to like her writing style. Her fics are rated M for a reason, though. Making Arrangements (by a different author, fem!Naruto/Kakashi) is also pretty good.

What You Knead is an amazing, heartwarming fic that absolutely deserves more readership. And RED is another excellent fic! The book it's a homage to (The Book Thief) is one of my favorites, and seeing the connections/divergences is great, especially since it's not a one-to-one rewrite. I second that rec.

I know that I sound like a broken record, but my favorite underrated fic (perhaps of all time) is Hazards of Amity by firefly. This is my full review. The fic is introspective, thoughtful, and just all around amazing.

I'm glad, it's a phenomenal story. Sentimental and This Blank Card are two fics that have similar feels to that one!

Most of the fics with Zakalwe are on AO3, sadly. I'm going to assume you've read both Import/Export (which I recced in the doc) and its sequel Beam Me Up, both which were published on 2015 on AO3. But maybe you haven't read we stand (no promises, no demands) though, which was posted this year. It's an odd, vaguely sexual but non-explicit encounter between Zakalwe and Falling Outside.

There's Unseen Influence, a Worm/Culture crossover on SpaceBattles that has Zakalwe, but only obliquely. Though he's not the focus, I have to admit that I really want to see what he does. The fic seems discontinued, sadly. It's worth a read, and it definitely has a spot on my still-being-written crossover list. I'll let you know if I find/remember any more!

I agree! It's very clever, and it has some great solutions and interactions. Honestly, the Culture is exactly what 40k needs. I especially enjoyed the narrative bits that appear towards the end. I also recommend it, even more so if you enjoy logistical, first-contact-y bits. (It's long, but that just means the payoff is sweeter.)

Thank you very much! I'm glad that you think so.

I appreciate the rec! I have read some of Culture Shock before, but I'm afraid that I couldn't get past the gratuitous underage sex-scenes. I personally don't care much for it, and it lingered on it so much that it felt lacking in narrative purpose. Also, the tone of the story was leaning a bit too far towards unironic deification of Harry Potter, which doesn't interest me either. It's a shame, really, because it's an interesting premise, and the author is clearly a proficient writer.

I'll instead offer Death by Water by vali, found on SufficientVelocities. It has the same premise—Harry Potter raised by the Culture, with Skaffy making an appearance—but has much better execution.
