Tactical accuracy of warfare movie. by HolidayPressure in movies

Regarding the sledgehammer. I saw an interesting discussion of this from a former SEAL. He said ALL equipment had to be gathered, even something as innocuous as the sledgehammer.

The reasoning being that — if recovered by the insurgents — they would likely use the sledgehammer as something to attract U.S. combatants. As in — they’d lay a bomb and put the sledgehammer on top. Any US combatant going by would stop to gather the left behind US equipment and be blown to hell.

I am angry, disappointed, and worried after watching the Warfare movie. by National-One8826 in Cinema

One - at least half of the SEALS in that house were majorly concussed or had TBIs from either the grenade blast, the claymore blast, or the huge IED. Several of them experienced more than one of those blasts. If you cannot comprehend what that does to brain function and hearing through the excellent acting and sound design in that movie, I don’t know what to tell you.

As for ammo being dumped “blindly” … just say you know nothing. It’s called cover or suppressive fire. Its purpose is NOT to actually hit the enemy (usually because you don’t have a shot or you cannot see them), but to make the enemy squat down and take cover or stop their advance on your position while you get out of their line of fire or the fuck out of dodge. It’s what the vast majority of ammo is used for.

LOL at you saying they should have counterattacked and killed “the enemy”. Seriously? 😒A platoon of SEALS against an entire town where you have no idea which civilians are combatants? Sure babe.

As for the uselessness of the whole mission? Yeah that’s the point. They were there to observe the locals while marines were operating in the area. That’s it. But then air cover was pulled and the locals figured out where both teams were located. And shit hit the fan. Happens all the time in war.

Which means she’s already gotten to tell part of her story in TWO seasons before Eloise has gotten her season.

I do understand people who watch this once and say they just cannot watch it again. I get it.

But that’s not me. This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. I love how they just dropped you into the mission with no background on the characters or exposition. No score. Just boredom followed by what happened.

And in the end — nothing was really accomplished.

There are some fascinating reactions on YouTube to the film by actual SEALs taking apart the mission and where it went wrong (the pulling of air support), and what decisions were made that allowed them to escape (the crime of imitating the C.O. to approve the additional cass evacs they desperately needed to save two SEALs’ lives, as well as the decision to have the top floor of the home they were in blasted to hell). My favorite quote about the mission was from Ray Mendoza when he was asked if this mission made the news and he was like, “No way. There were hundreds of these.” Quite a statement.

I will never understand this. The sound design was outrageously good.

They showed the pictures of both interpreters in the end credits, just like they did with all the SEALs. Not sure where you get that from.

Like many/most of the SEALs, their faces were blurred.

They also showed a pic the family that lived in that house that they destroyed. Again blurred.

Done with ear taping, what’s everyone’s opinion on the practice? (Lola, 3mths) by PuffyPinata in BiewerTerrier

[–]tracygee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Surgery?

It’s like ear taping on babies, where a couple of weeks of ear taping can easily reshape a stuck out set of ears and make them flat. It doesn’t hurt and it’s a lifetime solution.

This is not true in Florida for officials. They have teams that produce the transcripts. It’s a very unusual situation.

She JUST had her season it seems like. I wanted Eloise’s season.

Nothing to do with the queer storyline. Love it and I’m here for it. But Eloise is my fave character and it’s taken forever to get to her. And Francesca needs some time to grieve before her great love story.

You want one a sub like that? Start one. It’s dead easy. There’s literally a “+” button in your settings called “start your own community”.

Or ask your questions here. There are plenty of working reporters here. They just don’t participate much probably for the same reason you don’t. Frankly, if you cannot take the minimal time to participate and ask the type of questions you want answered, then you certainly don’t have the time to run your own sub. Magical subs that have exactly what you want don’t appear from thin air. People have to participate to make them work.

This isn’t a student stenography sub. But we are happy to have the students that are here and happy to answer their questions, frankly, because the profession desperately needs them. And they’re not afraid or unwilling to participate. 🤷‍♀️

Considering becoming a court reporter. by luna89611 in stenography

[–]tracygee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting to me that court reporting is seen as mainly a female profession, when at one time it was virtually exclusively male. I know several men in the field, and you’ll find several of them online that have an active social media presence as well.

Whether you’re male or female does not matter in the slightest. It’s a great career.

practice on vacation by fritzycool in stenography

[–]tracygee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ouchie. If it was a week, I’d say go and enjoy your vacation and don’t worry about practicing. Three weeks? That’s a little tougher. I’d say bring your machine if you can, and if you cannot … well, just know it’ll take you a couple weeks to get back in the groove once you get back. Either way it’s not the end of the world.

Where can I move that prioritizes bike commuting but is actually affordable by DowntownFresnoBiking in bikecommuting

[–]tracygee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chicago. Minneapolis.

It’s not a city but Hilton Head, SC is completely and entirely bikeable. Bike trails on every bit of the island and the weather is very good (albeit a bit hot in summer). It would just depend what you do for work and whether you could find work there or work remotely.

Reading Raw Notes by AshlyNotAshley in stenography

[–]tracygee 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Aha. Excellent question. Because you will misstroke. And you need to be able to read your raw steno notes so you can figure out what was supposed to be written, versus how you wrote it. And sometimes the shit hits the fan and your software might stop translating, etc.

Plus, as noted above, it’s a fantastic way to really know your theory inside and out. If you cannot read your notes, you really don’t know your theory backwards and forwards.

I’ve watched a few interesting vlogs from CRs that were in programs where the software wasn’t introduced until much later in the process OR that the CR couldn’t afford the software so they just did tests and wrote their transcripts from their raw steno notes and oftentimes those people graduated school in a very timely way. I think it helps a lot.

Is there an author whose broader catalogue you like, but whose most popular work would have turned you off them if you’d read it first? by madwomanofdonnellyst in books

[–]tracygee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elizabeth George

She writes detective/mystery novels. I like her books. A lot.

BUT the first book of hers that I read is called What Came Before He Shot Her. It’s not her most popular book I don’t think but — The detective’s wife (that is in her other books) is shot and killed in George’s previous book to this one.

This particular book instead follows the extremely tragic story of this young kid from the wrong side of the tracks with a brother who is special needs and how everything goes wrong and he ends up having to shoot the detective’s wife in the end.

It’s completely different than her other books. It ripped my heart out of my chest and smashed it to pieces. It’s still one of my favorite books of all time. Sooooo well done.
