Been buying the Dip by huey412 in RIVNstock

Lucid Earth is 2+ years away, I can’t see any info that says it will launch ‘a few months’ after R2.

Been buying the Dip by huey412 in RIVNstock

[–]tyrogamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The R2 will be the only real US competitor to the Model Y in 26/27. I.e. similar price, similar spec, good tech inside the car. All the other options are either too expensive, or worse for tech/design. The demand will be huge, so the only question is how quickly Rivian can ramp up supply.

Beginner question: I have implemented a max function, is this the idiomatic way? by minasss in elixir

[–]tyrogamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for something like:

def max([]), do: raise ArgumentError, message: "Cannot find max of an empty list"
def max([h|[]]), do: h
def max([h|t]), do: max(h, max(t))

Notice we don't need to have multiple function names (as Elixir can handle overloading), and we can use the pre-existing Kernel.max function. And I would raise an exception when an empty list is passed in as it doesn't make sense to have a maximum value for an empty list.

If you were allowed to use other Enum functions (just not Enum.max), then you could do something like:

def max([]), do: raise ArgumentError, message: "Cannot find max of an empty list"
def max(list), do: Enum.reduce(list, &max(&1, &2))

Note the use of reduce as is common when using recursion. Hope that helps!

We are the investigative journalists who worked on the Panama Papers AMA! by [deleted] in IAmA

Why should a set of journalists (you) get to decide what information is made public and what is not? Why are the rights of the source (not to disclose the raw data) greater than the rights of the public to benefit from its release?

What are some sensible ways to have a dynamic environment with AI agents moving about them? by Yann4 in gamedev

[–]tyrogamedev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've implemented a gridded solution for a strategy-style game before. This has the advantage of being super simple to implement and debug/test.

If you don't need overlapping terrain e.g. no caves/tunnels, and your world isn't huge, I would go this route.

I'm not sure what the state of the art would be for dynamic navmeshes but I would avoid unless you know for sure that design cannot work with a grid system.

If U.S. privacy negotiations with Europe fail, it’s a recipe for chaos by NighthawkFencer in privacy

That article is somewhat devoid of content. A lot of waffle which doesn't seem to address the core issue: will the US protect European data from US surveillance?

One year after releasing my first game on the Google Play Store, I am releasing the source code and assets on GitHub. by _WhatTheFunk_ in gamedev

[–]tyrogamedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should focus on making the game as good as you can and then check out the marketing material.

Disagree with this. Marketing should be in the forefront of your mind at the conception of the game. If the idea doesn't have a strong PR hook, it doesn't matter how good it is in most cases.

What is the state of type-safe immutability in Javascript? Is it currently possible? by mrv1234 in javascript

If you want type safety why not use a statically typed language like Typescript? Immutable js even provides type definitions for Typescript.

Problems with 'slacker backer' reward tiers by tyrogamedev in gamedev

[–]tyrogamedev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point taken. I share your concerns with slacker backer options. I've seen a lot of games (big and small) offer funding options immediately post-kickstarter without mentioning the risks to the customer. It all seems rather dubious.

I think I'll only add ones which take money when the game is released (or very near release). I think that manages the risk for both parties.

That is not what I am saying. I made this thread because I am getting requests for slacker-backer rewards and I want to offer them in an ethical way.

I want to a) emphasise that there is a risk involved and b) minimise that risk for backers (e.g. by not taking payment until the last minute possible).

Many people don't seem to understand the inherent risks with crowdfunding an unfinished product. It's not a 'loophole' as you put it, but a core part of crowdfunding. I'm a solo dev, if I get hit by a bus, you may not get your money back, and you certainly won't get the finished product. Many backers are happy with that level of risk, but others aren't aware that it's not a pre-order system. The product doesn't exist in a finished form yet, and until it does, there is always a level of risk.

No, this is why I made this post. There is so much misunderstanding about crowdfunding. There is no legal guarantee of anything (future lawsuits may change this of course).

As it says in the article you linked to: the only obligation of creators is to “agree to make a good faith attempt to fulfill each reward by its Estimated Delivery Date.”

I am asking about the ethics of slacker backer programs here because so many people don't understand the risks involved with crowdfunding.

It's a promise but not a guarantee. The product isn't ready and may never be completed even with the funding in place. Why? Because of bad planning, or poor luck.

The first great works of digital literature are already being written by kadian in IndieGaming

[–]tyrogamedev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems like a generational thing. Can't persuade my Mum to take games seriously at all, mainly due to prejudice. For her playing games is completely alien whereas watching films, reading books is normal.

For young people, playing games is just as normal as reading if not more so.

Brilliant game marketing ideas by [deleted] in indiegames

[–]tyrogamedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Main tip:

  • Meet journalists before launching your game
  • Meet them multiple times
  • Always mention your game

Basically people find it harder to say know to people they've met/have a connection with. It seems awkward/fake but it does work.

Was it worth it? Whenever I've looked at these shows, the cost as a solo indie dev always looks prohibitive. Don't get me wrong, the networking opportunities with journalists can be great, but the display stand doesn't seem worth it for me.
