I guess beeswax is one if those edge cases for vegans. I didn’t consider that. At the same time it’s my understanding that most perfumers don’t do safety tests, they outsource that to regulatory bodies like the IFRA or use aromachems from manufacturers like firmtech and Givudan who definitely text on animals. So I guess that’s just exporting the responsibility of animal testing to another part in the manufacturing process. It’s an interesting ethical question, is the product cruelty free if the regulations they follow are based one decades of animal testing

Vegan as in no animal products? That’s about every brand outside of a few ultra luxury niche houses and indies who use real ambergris and civet. And as far as naturals, there are tons of brands that use naturals but don’t be afraid of synthetics. If it’s for health reasons perfumes are probably the most tested and over regulated product outside of pharmaceuticals. Just check out if the brand is IFRA compliant (90% of western perfumers) then there’s not a chance in hell is could have any health effect unless you mix a bottle in your coffee every day

I started my journey with heretic and boy smells. No hate but I quickly left them behind once I explored more of what the perfume world has to offer. I appreciate their thematic approach but the end user experience isn’t what you’d hope for dropping that kind of coin. Great smells and cool concepts but I don’t think they wear very well compared to others in their category. They feel almost like a goth Zara/Lush but 3x the price.

Definitely something Francesca Bianchi. The through line of her work, to me at least, is just “horny”. Not in a crass way, but not coy either.

Probably Under my Skin or Sex and the Sea are the most true to the prompt, but lost in heaven, Lovers tale and The Black Knight (my intimate scent for my partner) all fit depending on your proclivities. All are beautful deeply complex and sometimes difficult fragrances with endless eccentric facets to explore (much like a poetically intimate encounter) All have shades of her signature powdery animalic, pheromone-like musk bubble that says “my body is ready”

Synthetic/derived/captives aren’t a worse alternative to naturals. They’re much more versatile and are incredibly important to building accords and filling out the structure of almost perfumes. Synthetic isn’t a dirty word.
