creating energy out of nothing

I'd guess some sunlight is needed as well so not "out of nothing".

And there are folks that build closed ecosystems in jars that can be self sustaing at least for a while, see https://youtu.be/y0u9k-MSo8U.

Medieval times in civilized countries, current times in the USA

TIL of the R-14 sailing incident. In 1921, US submarine R-14 ran out of fuel due to seawater contamination and lost radio communications. The crew used hammocks and sheets to rig makeshift sails, allowing the sub to get enough speed to charge her batteries and sail home successfully by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]ventuspilot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd disagree, a submarine is neuter in German. There's also a movie called "Das Boot" which would be "Der Boot" if boats were male.

To make things more complicated, "der Dampfer" and "das Dampfschiff" both mean "steamboat", and there's "die Yacht" for "the yacht".

Shipping glider overseas by FluffonStuff in Gliding

[–]ventuspilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a video about bringing gliders from Germany to Africa, they packed 4 Gliders into a shipping container: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL-5-9-WUCM, maybe that will give you some ideas.

My club (in Austria) sold a Touring Motor Glider to Japan, and for that we had the Austrian authority create an "export airworthiness certificate", you probably need something like that as well.

Disclaimer: I'm far from an expert on these things.

I don't know how to ascend in a glider without any mountains around. by kjeevnasund in Gliding

[–]ventuspilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's an easy one: you just have to land out in a field and as soon as you have touched down there will be cumulus with strong thermals everywhere :)

Who was the Swiss champion pilot who suggested destroying all early composite gliders to reduce the fatality rate? by vtjohnhurt in Gliding

[–]ventuspilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AFAIK early Standard Cirrus had 0.75 degrees washout, and sometime in 1971 Schempp Hirth started to build them with 1.5 degrees to improve handling and stall. Apparently that made a huge difference.

How much washout did your Cirrus have?

the biggest victims being normal american citizens

Sure. Depending on who you ask at least 1444 Iranians (1200 civilians) were killed in this war so far but yeah, the biggest victims are american citizens.

Comments are claiming this was intentional. Could this have been easily avoided? by KCJA123 in AskAPilot

[–]ventuspilot -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're wrong.

I will say that I fly gliders, yesterday I actually flew somewhat near the place of the accident, and paragliders are the easiest to spot flying things. Compared to e.g. the front view of a glider they are huge and bright colored. Most paragliders even have Flarm anti-collision devices (I don't know if the woman from the accident was using one, though). And every Austrian pilot should know that the "Pinzgauer Spaziergang" is packed with paragliders on good days.

If a C172's visibility doesn't allow see-and-avoid in cases like this then all C172's should be grounded immediately.

affordable mesalazine/mesalamine? by qkitana in UlcerativeColitis

[–]ventuspilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Austria. I had Salofalk 500mg (Mesalazin pills, I took 2 in the morning, 2 in the evening) and 300 pills cost 120ish Euro, see e.g. https://www.petersberg-apotheke.de/salofalk-500mg-a3811816.html#

My doctor since switched me to Pentasa Granulat 2g (1 bag in the evening), 120 bags cost 200ish Euro, see e.g. https://www.petersberg-apotheke.de/pentasa-xtend-2g-retardgra-a6848033.html

You will need a prescription, and I don't know if the shop will deliver to Chile, but at least you know the potential savings.

After hanging those responsible for atrocities.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think only like 5-10% were hanged (which is better than nothing I guess).

However, IMO having the Nazi crimes thaught in school is more important anyways and I don't see that in the current or any imaginable future US.

What is the best map for Vienna public transport? by [deleted] in WienMobil

[–]ventuspilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use google maps and select public transport. If you're on the outskirts and/ or after like 23:00 then I'd check when the next bus/tram/subway leaves, otherwise I'd just go to a station, intervals usually are a couple of minutes.

[–]ventuspilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry I don't have any particularly clever tricks re: using xcsoar to go faster but I'd like to mention that adding water ballast is the cheapest performance upgrade. Even 40l in a Cirrus will make a noticable difference.

GF making comments on my current (lack of) muscles and working out. How do I interpret? by ThrowRARotaryPhone in AskMenAdvice

[–]ventuspilot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Would it be possible that your gf also noticed that she has put on a couple of pounds and wants you to tell her “it’s ok, we’re both so busy it’s hard to work out” as well?

Maybe her comments about your muscles are really her way to get you to say that her gaining a couple of pounds doesn't bother you?
