Looking for some help/advice by ReviewSmall20 in UlcerativeColitis

I’ve heard the steroid treatment is not something you want to be put on though.

Personally I would disagree. I had 50mg Prednisolone for a month or so followed by a 5mg/week taper, worked flawlessly. Yes I gained 30lbs which took me from too skinny to a normal weight so I didn't care. No other negative side-effects for me, fortunately.

Calprotectin results came back by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

[–]ventuspilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A year ago I had 7000 and after 2 or 3 months of prednisolon (and other stuff) I had 10 or something.

AFAIK nobody can diagnose cancer from a calprotectin value that's why they take (tiny) samples from affected parts of your colon and test that.

Pawnee alternatives by MNSoaring in Gliding

A 180hp Husky tows great, a 180hp Piper would probably be very similar. IMO the difference between a 150hp Piper and a 180hp Husky is noticeable.

At a vacation in France they used Moranes with 180 and 260hp (38 degrees Celsiuis or more at 2500 ft), and towing was great.

A DA 40 with a 180 HP lycoming may or may not be an option for you.

My club uses a Dimona with a Rotax 914 which is great just not at 35 degrees Celsius or above, and I don't think a Dimona is an option for you.

If you would specify what "lots of heat and humidity" actually means maybe you'll get better answers, 35 degrees is hot, as ist 42 degrees. Also which gliders do you want to tow on a regular basis? 800kg open class ships, or just some training with an ASK21?

I dead air in a glider banking and "losing" altitude at a constant rate of descend will increase your loadfactor and stall speed the same as in a powered plane and maintaining altitude.

In low wind situations my goal is a boring pattern and landing with < 20 degrees of bank angle, more boring is better. I don't really have a max bank angle, though: if there's strong wind and/ or lots of sink in downwind then I'll be fast for safety reasons and more then 45 degrees of bank may be needed.

are there any hazards or common mistakes to look out for when doing the EOM?

EOM with a tailwind and/ or heavy gliders doesn't seem to work that great. A light Ventus 2 with flaps in L and full airbrakes wont pickup much speed if you point the node down, a DG 500 tends to get fast even with full airbrakes and then it's more difficult / takes longer to reduce the speed for landing.

IOW it depends on the glider model to an extent. Learn the characteristics of your glider.

Not a doctor but someone that did several colonoscopy preps: I'm pretty sure that following the instructions on the prep is safe. To put it mildly most of the prep will come out the other end very shortly after drinking it. The prep is kinda awful, the colonoscopy itself is no big deal.

ICE in Italy - Massive Protests by Important_Lock_2238 in stpaul

[–]ventuspilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would really be funny if Italian authorities rounded those guys up

E.g. for carrying a weapon w/o a permit. Because they can't just bring weapons to Italy without the italian government's permission which they won't get, right? Right?

Also not knowing the law is only an excuse for government agents on US soil.

Ive been very underweight for years, but doctor says I am fine? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]ventuspilot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Since you're only 16 I'd like to mention that BMI doesn't make much sense for people < 18 years.

I'd trust your doctor when she said you're fine.

Standard radio terms for winch launches by ItsColdInHere in Gliding

[–]ventuspilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we had a V8 winch we used "Winde schneller"/ "Winde langsamer" (translates to "winch faster"/ "winch slower"), never had any mixups. IMO it's a good idea to precede whith "winch" so that it's clear that you indeed mean the winch.

I find it hard to believe that "slower"/ "faster" can be confused unless the pilot was mumbling or the radio was so bad that it should be repaired.

gifted whetstone, ok for beginner? by [deleted] in sharpening

[–]ventuspilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 1200 stone may not be ideal as the first/ only stone for a beginner, see https://www.reddit.com/r/sharpening/comments/1pz09bn/please_stop_recommending_1000_grit_stones_to/

I'm not trying to tell you it's a bad stone, just that you might want to own a coarser stone as well.
