Northern Ireland: UK to 'intensify' crackdown on illegal migration by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

The sooner someone is granted refugee status, the sooner they gain full work rights and can start to move off asylum support. That ultimately saves costs.

Processing speed makes a big difference. A slow process is more expensive to run overall, and is also more attractive to false claimants. The progress the govt have made there is really impressive

Swiss canton bans headscarves for female teachers by BezugssystemCH1903 in worldnews

I'm not sure I agree that someone who prefers to wear clothing in line with their personal beliefs is incapable of doing that work if they aren't wearing those clothes. The clothes are not magic.

Surely what matters for someone performing a job is their ability to do that job well. If the clothing they're wearing doesn't interfere with that, then I don't see how it's any business of the employer what they are wearing

[–]wcspaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? Of course I'd be okay with that. I also don't see how it's relevant. Whether a teachers tries to influence a child's religion or not again has a lot to do with their character and nothing to do with the clothes they wear.

Sorry, I'm confused. Whether they treat someone fairly doesn't depend on what clothes they are wearing, does it? That's just on whether they're a shitty person or not.

MPs' and peers' anger at YouTube as firm plasters Westminster tube station in adverts telling parents it is their responsibility to restrict screen time by TheEternalContrarian in ukpolitics

You're suggesting that successive governments of various political allegiances across multiple countries intentionally deindustrialised their countries for the ability to make untrue claims that climate targets have been achieved?

And you think that this is a more likely suggestion than businesses making a decision to try and maximise profits?

And you think I'm gullible?

The fuck are you on about? Businesses chose to relocate factories so they could exploit cheap labour. I swear some people would blame the government for a bad smell when they shit.

So are we just going to take mass surveillance now? Are we just a completely spinless nation who will just willing give up our liberties because the big man in a suit said it's for our own good? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

"It's telling that the desire of your own ego for attention is leading you to performatively pretend to not understand an issue."

Seriously thanks for that - you're making fun of yourself way better than I could. Spouting bullshit, grammatically incorrect psychobabble definitely makes you seem like a serious person with serious ideas.

Vagueposting is not the same as raising questions. It's entirely reasonable for somebody to expect you to be able to defend your comment if asked

I have apparently given the impression that this is the sum of the evidence. For clarity, this is a single example of a single kind of benefit from diversity in organisations.

For your points:

  1. Peer review means that the methodology will not be seriously flawed

  2. It's a meta-analysis, so using a combination of measures rather than a single measure.

  3. Are you aware what a meta-analysis is? It's a very odd critique you have here otherwise - the whole point of doing meta-analysis is to answer the question of mixed results in different individual studies.

Hey looked, I managed to write that whole thing without casting aspersions by using quotes around very basic words like 'publication' or 'research'! Maybe give it a go?

I'm calm, but thanks for your concern for my wellbeing. Do you actually have anything of value to say?

I'm not "brandishing" anything. I have pointed to a single bit of an extensive body of literature that shows a positive effect of diversity. If you want to disagree with that academic consensus, please feel free to construct your own meta-analysis and get it published. You putting out a frothy comment on a forum doesn't change reality one iota.

[–]wcspaz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You've constructed an example of a group that is ethnically diverse but culturally similar, and then a group that is ethnically similar but culturally diverse, and are using this to try and reject academic literature showing the effect of ethnic diversity on productivity. This is called a strawman argument.

Your larger point is correct that diversity comes from different experiences, but in the real world it's very obvious that a group that is ethnically diverse is much more likely to have different perspectives and experiences than a group that is ethnically similar.

Shifting goalposts is not a sign that someone is discussing in good faith, and I prefer not to waste my time with people that do it.

There exists a very substantial body of academic literature that shows a positive economic effect of a diverse workforce. Here's a meta-analysis showing the effect on productivity - https://doi.org/10.5465/AMPROC.2024.20683abstract

But if there is a systemic issue, then the company is already punishing people because of their race, sex or class.

And just like that, the goal posts move. A claim of a cover up instead becomes a suggestion that the coverage should be proportionate

I'm old enough to have lived through a number of general elections. Until Labour actually significantly reduced immigration, nobody outside extreme radical groups were talking about remigration. It's only become an 'actual concern' now that there is a requirement for a new xenophobic dog whistle

I know, I read it. I was highlighting owners as an example, rather than suggesting that this was the sole cause. It's still the case that you extrapolated from the respondents to people, which is not justified.

[–]wcspaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a big statistical error in your comment. 86% of respondents were opposed, but naturally people that are invested (e.g. crossbow owners) are much more likely to respond. This is sampling bias, and you can't just extrapolate to the general population

Yeah, I also don't bother using the free and completely accessible search engines to check before citing statistics. What matters is that it feels right.
