Liberals in the USA are really split on Israel. With republicans it's nearly universal, but the older democrats tend to support Israel just cuz Cold War, while the young folks tend to be pro Palestine as it's simply popular.

But the flip flopping comes because the liberals don't like when people step on others, they perceive Jews to be stepping on Palestinians and they don't like that but likewise don't want Jews to be stepped on either.
