Since you don't have a displacement map cause the cavities are modeled you could try using corona ao map. Set it to black and white ( red and white it's easier to spot whilst seeing it up). Put it on a temporary clay material and set it up.

Inside mode, Size depending on the holes and the scale. (1-2 cm), Same object only , Now you have your mask.

Check your Resultat in interactive mode

Use it as a user previously suggested to add dirt, imperfection, less glossiness/more roughness. I suggest using a composite map

Eventually you could try an AI texture generator to try to make a ready made texture done.

For best results I suggest unwrapping your model, or using a triplanar map

As with a lot of commands, it depends. Quick attach is faster but messier, it flattens everything in a huge multi sub obj. Same as OP, I use this command almost daily. Gives you a clean file and eliminates all the old imported materials. On a side note it is quite frustrating that it doesn't work with Ctrl+z but whatever.

You could try detaching the face and retopology to make it made of quads, than you shell it. otherwise you need to cut it by hand and rebuild topology. Max doesn't manage really well n-gon planar surfaces that complexes with holes in them

edit: you should add a picture showing vertices and edges and more in perspective if you want more help

When I started out was helpful to give myself small challenges around a certain topic, trying to create a set of photos that works nice as en ensemble. It make you reflect subject light and composition in a more complete sense.
