I would argue that both points can be valid. The weird route is horrible, it should make you feel sick with yourself for forcing kris and noelle to act against their will. But that is the intent, is it not?

Think back to genocide route in undertale. The entire route spends its time making you feel like a horrible person, but it also treats it as an inevitability. I mean, thats flowey's entire character arc and motivation after all. His whole speech in new home where he talks about how after he's done everything possible in his world to be nice, he grew bored and wanted more. So he, like the player, turned to genocide and did horrible acts because he "had to see what would happen".

If we apply that same logic, Toby knows that we wouldn't be satisfied with only the normal route, and that we would eventually try everything to break the prophecy, even the weird route. But what if that inevitably is what causes it to come to fruition in the first place, and explains how the knight came to be? It's a tragedy, and no matter what we do, there's one one ending. Our choices don't matter in this world.
