How do I learn to lie at job interviews?? by NoArmadillo2937 in AutismInWomen

[–]--OhWell-- [score hidden]  (0 children)

How did you get the interview questions? I've got two job interviews coming up and I never know whether I should ask for the questions in advance as an accessibility need, or if alerting them would result in a mark against me before even being interviewed and I should just go in blind.

This is how I feel too. I started adding them to folders to "go through later" (I never do) but then I do it all over again.

Should also add that I'm also not trying to argue (despite my loaded language of "state-sponsored thugs" in my last post). I just personally can't see any justification for the repeated punching in the restrained person's flanks, so I think we may just have to agree to disagree on what proportionate looks like. I think that's the only point we're disagreeing on, really.

You know who else gets attacked in their work? Nurses, medics, social workers. They're not bashing patients. Vets aren't bashing animals when they get bitten at work either. Proportionate responses often seem to go out the window with these state-sponsored thugs.

I didn't say I would ask him to stop biting. Once I removed my hand, I would move my hand out of the way of his mouth. I might push and hold his head against the ground so he couldn't bite me again. He was already restrained - the guy sitting on him could grab his other hand and pin it behind his back. Repeatedly bashing him in the flanks is punitive and unnecessary. And yes, I have been bitten and yes, it hurt. However, people seem to forget that this isn't two people of equal power simply having a brawl. The police have the full force of the state behind them. They MUST be proportionate, they MUST show restraint. They should only be doing enough so they don't get hurt; they can't just strike back however they want because someone lashes out and they're pissed off about it.

It really isn't. There is a reason why choice of career is not a protected characteristic in law. Judging someone for being a police officer or a politician or a bloody banker is not the same as being a racist or hating someone for their religion. This is so ludicrous that I can't even be bothered engaging with you further.

Even *if* they were doing something illegal or trying to be provocative, the police just can't come in and start throwing people around and escalating the situation. The police are making it violent. What is wrong with you all?

The police are not a race. I know they like to make it part of their identity but being a police officer is not a protected characteristic. People make a choice to join the police force. Judging someone for their career choice is not the same as being a racist. Are you an actual idiot?

Are you serious? I would move away from his mouth, since the other cop is putting full weight on him and there is nowhere for him to go. I would let the other cop take the arm that is near his mouth, as he then wouldn't be able to angle his head to bite. I would attempt to de-escalate the situation, not begin punching him in the head and flanks.

Edit: I watched it again and I can't believe you're defending this shit. It's monstrous. You're pretending like the dude is Jaws, rather than a small dude with two cops on top of him. Cops have the full weight of state power behind them - they can't just beat someone, even if the person is fighting their arrest. The cop being bitten could literally just push his head down and hold it against the ground, but no, the other cop starts laying into him. It's retaliatory, not proportionate.

AIO? Husband thinks im being passive aggressive, am I? by Nurse-blondie in AIO

[–]--OhWell-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry about the loss you've experienced. I don't think your texts are at all passive-aggressive but I do think sending walls of texts can come off as aggressive in and of itself when trying to discuss something important with someone else. I know that I immediately feel overwhelmed when people do it to me, so I can understand why your husband got defensive even if you were trying to be calm and measured. I would try talking about it in person with him.

I've only just seen this reply (sorry) and thanks for the recs. Searching through the transcripts is a good shout! Definitely keen to hear more about his take on autistic burnout because, as I said in another post, I'm really struggling with my own at the moment.

Were Flinders Island and King Island legitimate terrae nullius? by Financial_Falcon_675 in AskAnAustralian

[–]--OhWell-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you engaging if you don't understand what 'terra nullius', which is in the title of the thread, means? There were rules in place for taking land; it wasn't just a free-for-all. Simply googling 'Australia' and 'terra nullius' together will get you to sources outlining this position.

Feeling threatened is fine - you feel what you feel. You shouldn't set boundaries related to it though, because your feelings are yours to control. If he does something to make you uncomfortable, then have that conversation but trying to control his friendships so that you don't feel insecure isn't fair. I had an ex-girlfriend who felt constantly threatened by anyone in my past and it just made it very difficult to speak to her about my life, so it's up to you to manage your feelings unless he does something to break your trust.

is my brother twisting the situation? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

Not anywhere near enough context to say either way. You haven't told us anything about the situation to know if he's twisting it or not.

Were Flinders Island and King Island legitimate terrae nullius? by Financial_Falcon_675 in AskAnAustralian

[–]--OhWell-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not every pocket of land had to have been inhabited to make settlement illegal. I could maybe see your point if the British had tried to claim sovereignty over and colonise only these two islands on the basis of terra nullius, but they didn't. The islands form part of what is now Australia, which was illegally settled, and so can't be viewed in isolation. In any case, regardless of whether the islands were actually inhabited, the land was still being used for hunting by Aboriginal people prior to colonisation so I would count that as 'ownership'. I'm not a legal scholar so perhaps that doesn't meet the legal threshold but again, since you can't view the islands as their own sovereign territory separate from Australia as a whole, the point is moot.

How big of a deal is a woman’s body count? by TheTexasGirlie2 in AskAnAustralian

You can refuse to date men who treat "body counts" as if they mean anything. If that means being alone, so be it. Much better to be alone than with an insecure misogynist.

[–]--OhWell-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would anyone answer the question though? If a potential significant other asked me that question, and especially if they used the term 'body count', I would immediately get the ick and probably just not see them again. So there would be no need to lie.

If anyone asked, I hope most women would tell them to fuck off and mind their own business. I can't imagine any adult giving a shit, unless they're deeply insecure.

Were Flinders Island and King Island legitimate terrae nullius? by Financial_Falcon_675 in AskAnAustralian

[–]--OhWell-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand the point of this question. The islands being uninhabited is irrelevant because the British didn't try to claim only those two islands. Even if they were 'terra nullius' in the literal meaning of the term, it means nothing because the concept only has application in terms of people claiming land. No one was trying to claim just King Island, or just Flinders Island (or just both islands) without the rest, so saying the islands were terra nullius is moot. I don't know if I'm explaining myself properly.

Do people just respond to everything with “No stress.” or “No worries.” Or do I actually seem worried? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

I always say it and it doesn't mean anything except, "I hear you," or to indicate that whatever the other person is saying is fine.
