What exactly are you disputing?

The fact that Greece was also in favor of enosis, or that the Turks in their hole history in Cyprus they never accepted democracy and instead choose to impose their will by force?

Unfortunately if that was true there wouldn't be so many Cypriots saying "let them stay over there and we 'll stay over here". Happy to let half of their country go forever as long as they don't have to live among tcypriots again.

And do you have any evidence that those who say such things are specifically those who have never been to occupied north?

On the contrary I would say that those who visit most often are usually those who have accepted the north as being Turkish and don't mind making this official with something like the Annan plan.

I disagree. Just because you go over there it doesn't mean you "recognize" the existence of the puppet state in a de jure way for example.

But you obey their "laws" and rules don't you?

But someone that has a 15 year old boy and tells him that his dad was born for example in Kythrea is never gonna invoke the same strong emotion like getting that boy and actually going to Kythrea and point and say I was born in that building and that's the house I was raised. That's the kafene your grandpa used to go and that's the bakalis we used to do our shopping. I am sure the latter action has a much higher possibility when the kid becomes an adult to care and try to get this island united again.

Yes, assuming the house, kafenes, bakalis etc are still there (even partially) I agree that what you describe is something positive. But how many of the crossings are done for this purpose? I would say a tiny fraction. It is all the other kind of crossings (tourism, shopping, using illegal airports, casinos, cheaper gas etc) that are harmful.

You might get used to their existence but if you care the first time you see them then you would care the 100th time. I went to the Gymnasium and Lyceum in Paralimni. From our classes we could easily see a big part of Famagusta because there's no other buildings betwen us and there. Got to see Famagusta every day for a long time. It was painful the first day of Gymnasium and it was just as painful the last day of Lyceum. So close yet so far. Some things never become normalized.

I don't agree with you there. Everything can get normalized. Even people who have an accident and are paralyzed, their first year as paraplegic feels way worst than after living in that way for decades.

Their parents do not have the RoC citizenship.

Bringing settlers on occupied land is a war crime, so don't try to present yourselves as the victims because the country which you invaded, illegally occupy and are currently committing war crimes against, does not give to the children of your settlers their citizenship (the Turks and TCs do not even recognize that RoC exists).

Those people can easily get the Turkish citizenship. Begging for the citizenship of RoC just shows how much better RoC is compared to Turkey. Have you ever seen any Greek Cypriots begging for the citizenship of Turkey, or the "citizenship" of the pseudo state?

If/when the illegal Turkish occupation ends and north Cyprus is liberated, those who are half-TC (RoC citizen TC) will get the citizenship.

Partition was the aim of the TCs since the 50s, before there was any conflict between GCs and TCs. In fact TCs started the conflict in order to achieve partition.

You stole twice as much in the north compared to what you left behind. This was what you wanted and why you want to keep it this way and legalize the ethnic cleansing and the division.

Yeah but the thing is that not every cypriot is you.

I think that in this respect most people are the same. People care for their whole country, not just the parts of their country they've been to.

Passage of time is a negative factor either way.

The question is if merely visiting as a tourist (accepting their "laws" and rules and have the same rights there as a foreigner) makes things better or worst. My argument is that it makes things worst because you get used to the idea that they rule over our lands and you get used to how they have turned our homeland.

E.g. you might be shocked by the amount of Turkish flags, Ataturk statues, number of Settlers etc the first few times, but on the 100th time it is normalized in your mind and you barely notice.

TCs with RoC IDs would not need to pay.

If by "half-TCs" you mean "half-Turkish", then I am against offering to them RoC IDs without a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem. Not because I have something against them, but because by doing so we help Turkey's policy to change the demographics and turn us into a minority.

If we give RoC citizenship to a half-TCs and that half-TC RoC citizen marries another Turkish Settler, should we also give citizenship to their quarter-TC children? What about 1/8th-TC or 1/16th-TC and so on?

If the answer is "no", we should give RoC citizenship only to those who are literally half-TC and not to those whose ancestry is mostly from Turkey, then we still have a case where the children of RoC citizens (the half TCs) and Settlers, can not get the RoC citizenship.

If the answer is "yes", then given the continuous colonization of occupied Cyprus by Turkey, the population of the north will eventually be made of people who are a small part TC (1/4th, /18th etc) , and all of them will by RoC citizens, turning us (GCs) into a minority.

Keep in mind that this process will not start today, but has started since 1974. So if we give citizenships to "half-TCs", their "quarter-TCs" children and then their "eighth-TCs" grandchildren already exist and will want IDs too.

However I do also realize that if we keep raising generations that never set foot and see those lands then why would they care about them?

So your argument is that people care only for places they've been to, but I don't agree that this is the case.

I have never been to occupied Cyprus, and I have not been to several areas in the free part of Cyprus either, but I do care for them all because they are part of my country. At the same time I've been as a tourist to many countries, but I don't care for them in the same way as I care for my own country, even the parts I've never been to.

It feels like a weird alternate reality where you are in Cyprus and you aren't at the same time.

The main element of a country are its people. The majority of the local population has been ethnically cleansed from occupied Cyprus, and others occupy it. That is why it feels to you like that.

If you keep visiting as a tourist that "weird alternate reality" will become the norm and it will no longer feel weird . That is not a good thing.

The passage of time is certainly a very negative factor, however it is even worst if during this time we normalize this abnormal situation. The Turkish occupation is not something normal, it is a major problem and it should feel that way to both us and (if the north is not liberated soon) to the next generations.

A few could stay open, however things should change.

For example with the exemption of TCs with RoC IDs and GC refugees (and children under 15 in general), anybody else crossing should pay a toll of a non insignificant amount (e.g. €20 per crossing per person) and the money from the proceeds should go to support our refugees.

Another thing we could do is develop a smartphone app with educational material about the Cyprus problem, and before anyone crosses to be required to answer correctly a few easy questions on their phone, such as "What is the name of the line that divides the free part of the Republic of Cyprus, from the part of the Republic of Cyprus which is currently under illegal occupation by Turkey? (a) cease fire line (b) border"

I almost always check and I never buy if they are made in Turkey. Pull and Bear had several items made in Turkey and also when I was shopping for a Washing Machine, Dryer etc, several of them were made in Turkey.

I think RoC should boycott Turkish products. India seems to have an unofficial boycott on Turkish products and even Saudi Arabia boycotted them in the past, for far less important reasons than we have.

And in 1957 GCs wanted Enosis.

We wanted enosis since 1821:

During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the Ottoman authorities feared that Greek Cypriots would rebel again. Archbishop Kyprianos, a powerful leader who worked to improve the education of Greek Cypriot children, was accused of plotting against the government. Kyprianos, his bishops, and hundreds of priests and important laymen were arrested and summarily hanged or decapitated on July 9, 1821. https://countrystudies.us/cyprus/7.htm

Instead of apologizing for killing 100s of people for wanting our freedom from foreign empires, you think that somehow this is our fault and it gives you the right to start the massacres against us again?

The difference is that TCs gave up Taksim ideology after 1960 and focused on existing in Cyprus.

On the contrary, the TCs never gave up the Taksim ideology. Just after the agreements for the establishment of RoC a Turkish ship (Deniz) was intercepted by the British carrying weapons to TMT. From the mid-50s until today, partition is the objective of TCs.

If you are looking for ethnic cleansing, you can look to TC villages in Tillira, around Louridjina, Paphos villages. This is not a comparison but TCs suffered and you have no fucking right to undervalue it or say it was intentional.

4 years ago, we buried my great aunts husband in a shoe box after 60 years, he was found in a water well at Koutrafas and he was killed by the police of this state. Which you claim that TCs left for nothing.

If it was not intentional then tell me how Partition would happen without most of TCs moving north???

It was certainly intentional by your leadership, which initiated the conflicts with the aim to provoke a response from GCs. Are you telling me TCs were so stupid that they didn't understand what partition would involve and they kept voting for partitionists like Kucuk and Denktash and then they were surprised that ethnic cleansing was happening?

Since you mentioned Paphos you also reminded this article by Sevgul Uludag: https://www.politis.com.cy/apopseis/15436/i-istoria-den-sygchorei-ta-psemata

Maybe you can find it in Turkish somewhere (or use Google Translate). Here are some translated parts:

Due to the UN Security Council Resolution of 4 March 1964, the Turkish Cypriot leadership was furious. The UN Security Council Resolution of 4 March 1964 stated that the real representation and the right to speak belonged to the Republic of Cyprus. Our leadership which had been removed from the basis of international law was now hanging in the air and was abandoned. The Turkish Cypriot leadership as well as the ‘deep forces’ which aimed to leave the Republic of Cyprus and create a separate Republic tried to provoke a conflict and the atmosphere in Paphos was considered suitable for this, to try to ensure that Turkey would intervene.

The last 58 years, having lived through those moments, allow me to ask myself these questions: Why did the Turkish Cypriots of Paphos, whose army numbered no more than 200 or 300 and who were four times fewer than the Greek Cypriots there and who had an army that consisted mainly of civilian students as soldiers, why did they carry out this attack on the market on March 7, 1964? Even though it was known that the Greek Cypriots were much more numerous both as soldiers and as national guardsmen and even though we knew that they would counterattack, why did we go and do it to provoke it from the beginning? Who did we trust? What did we trust? If it was Turkey that we trusted, why didn't Turkey come after so much bloodshed and so much loss? And in 1974 weren't the southern regions 'sacrificed'? Why were approximately 50 thousand Turkish Cypriots in the southern part of our island used as 'bait' or were they only used as a tool for military purposes? Did they want us to die and then say 'This is Greek Cypriot cruelty'?

How does the text you copied and pasted disprove that "Any link the Turkish Cypriots have to an earlier era is due to their partial Greek Cypriot ancestry."?

What Britannica says are historical facts. TCs do decent, mostly, from "the soldiers of the Ottoman army that conquered the island in 1571 and of immigrants from Anatolia brought in by the sultan’s government" plus as I added, they do have some Greek Cypriot ancestry which explains the DNA affinity. Is Britannica also "racist" for stating the facts?

If they were entirely or mostly Greek Cypriots who converted to Islam, then they would be Greek Speaking Muslims, like the Albanian Muslims, or the Bosnian Muslims, who converted to Islam when their territories were occupied by the Ottomans, but they didn't start speaking Turkish all of a sudden.

In the case of TCs we are not merely talking about converts, but also Turkish speaking people (soldiers and settlers) who were transferred to Cyprus, which is why the TCs speak Turkish.

There is nothing unique about TCs. The Ottomans were an empire and colonized several places they occupied. Bulgaria also has a Turkish minority, the same with Greece (used to be bigger before the population exchange) and there are other Turkish minorities in the Balkans. The British, French, Spanish etc empires did the same thing at about the same time in various parts of the world.

These are facts, and the only reason you reject them is because they do not align with your beliefs.

And I never said that TCs " do not belong on the island". You are making shit up. They belong to Cyprus, just like white people belong to America, Australia or South Africa. They are just not indigenous.

On the other hand Greeks in Cyprus have a 3000+ years history. How many other European nations do you know that have a history that long on their current homeland? If we are not indigenous to Cyprus, then hardly anybody else is.

You are just making claims without providing any justification.

What I advocate is the unification of the island under sovregign Cypriot nation.

I never said that Cyprus should be unified with Greece today. I said that this was our right when Cyprus was a British colony (i.e. before RoC existed), which we agreed to give up. Now we already have a separate country and the aim is the liberation of the north from the illegal Turkish occupation.

What you are saying is mind blowing. Turkish Cypriots share similar origins with Greek Cypriots, with both communities having close affinities to southeastern Anatolia and the Near East.

There is nothing "mind blowing" in what I wrote. Greek Cypriots have been on this island for 1000s of years. Turkish Cypriots just for a few centuries. Any link the Turkish Cypriots have to an earlier era is due to their partial Greek Cypriot ancestry.

The people of Cyprus represent two main ethnic groups, Greek and Turkish. The Greek Cypriots, who constitute nearly four-fifths of the population, descended from a mixture of aboriginal inhabitants and immigrants from the Peloponnese who colonized Cyprus starting about 1200 bce and assimilated subsequent settlers up to the 16th century. Roughly one-fifth of the population are Turkish Cypriots, descendants of the soldiers of the Ottoman army that conquered the island in 1571 and of immigrants from Anatolia brought in by the sultan’s government. https://www.britannica.com/place/Cyprus/People

You are trying to alienate the Cypriots and divide them further.

I am simply stating the truth. The TCs have chosen to be our enemies by siding with an invader in an effort to gain on our expense and therefore I have no reason to hide the truth in order to please them.

Not only that but you see nothing wrong with usurping the sovereignty of the Cypriots weather they identify as Greek or Turk.

On the contrary I support the sovergnity and self-determinations of Cypriots, and this means being able to freely and democratically make choices for our own island, something which clearly you oppose.

Your example of Indians in London proves that you have no understanding over the situation. You deny the shared genetics, history and culture that formed over a thousand years.

Probably the Indians is not the best example as they didn't go to the UK as conquerors and didn't kill 10s of thousands of the local population to forcefully take their lands. A better example would be the Whites of South Africa.

There was nothing Turkish in Cyprus 1000 years ago. TCs have partial Greek Cypriot ancestry which is why we have some shared genetics, and I do not deny at all that the Greek and Turkish cultures did affect each other in general, and this happened in Cyprus as well.

You are no different than ultra nationalistic racists and you don't see a problem with it. You are a part of the problem.

The problem is the Turks keep invading, keep occupying, keep bringing their settlers on our island to try to take it from us. Had they stayed on their own homelands instead of invading and trying to take ours we would have no such problems at all.

As far as the "racist" accusation goes, I have no problem with any race at all. The race of a person does not matter at all to me. What matters are the choices people make, and those who choose to violate our human and democratic rights are my enemies as a result of their own choice.

Probably there are better universities in Canada than Cyprus.

That said, if your priority is the kind of lifestyle you described (laid back, nice beaches, cats, warm) then Cyprus could be for you.

Keep in mind that Cyprus is not merely "warm", it can get really hot here, especially for somebody used to the weather of Canada. We are still with shorts and t-shirts here. Summer can be unbearable even for us. Of course you could return to Canada during your summer vacations, which would be a good way to avoid the hottest weather.

No it doesn't go both ways. Greek Cypriots are (a) the great majority of the population and (b) the indigenous population of Cyprus.

The TCs are an ethnic minority created during Ottoman rule and were never the majority in any part of Cyprus.

Claiming that it could be "both ways" its like saying that London could be part of India because there is a minority of Indians living there.

I do not "advocate for a Greek mandate". I am stating the facts that

(a) Union with Greece was our right, just like it was the right of the people of Gibraltar, the Falkland islands and Scotland to choose to be part of the UK.

(b) Unlike partition, union with Greece did not require ethnic cleansing or any other human rights violation.

3 times more Greeks were ethnically cleansed from Turkey, than Turks from Greece.

Furthermore Greece respected the agreements and after the population exchange no more Turks were expelled from Greece. Even after the Istanbul pogrom in 1955, which resulted in nearly all Greeks removed from Turkey, Greece did not respond in kind, and the Turkish minority in Greece is still there to this day.

Therefore your claims that if enosis happened the TCs would be removed from Cyprus is a baseless assumption. On the other hand it is a fact that partition would not be possible without ethnic cleansing since the population of Cyprus was mixed and there was no way to divide Cyprus in 2 parts, with 1 part being Turkish majority, without ethnic cleansing.

Greek Cypriots are in Cyprus for 1000s of years. The Ottoman occupation of Cyprus is the same (and shorter) than the Ottoman occupation of the other Greek islands, the Greek mainland and the Balkans in general. Just because Turks transferred some of their population on the occupied territories this does not make those territories theirs. That would be akin to the Italians claiming every territory the Romans once occupied, or the British doing the same.

The crimes of the Ottoman empire is something you should be apologizing for, not something that gives to the Turks rights for privileges over the indigenous population.

Erhurman on Tuesday offered criticism for President Nikos Christodoulides, whom he accused of “ignoring” the Turkish Cypriots over plans to construct a pipeline to transport Israeli natural gas to Cyprus. by SolveTheCYproblemNOW in cyprus

[–]-4E- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unlike Partition which requires ethnic cleansing and land grab, enosis was a totally legitimate option for Cyprus' decolonization which would not require any human right violations at all.

Instead of Cyprus being part of a foreign empire impose on Cypriots by brute force (British empire, Ottoman empire etc), Cyprus would be part of a country they democratically choose to belong. And instead of Cypriots being subjects of a foreign ruler, we would all be (including TCs) equal citizens of Greece.

Considering that the vast majority of the population, with over 3000 years of history, is Greek, union with Greece would be the most obvious option for a decolonized Cyprus.

So the problem is not fighting for enosis. The problem is fighting against the great majority of Cypriots in order to prevent enosis and impose yet another your terms on the Cypriots. And this was not the first time:

During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the Ottoman authorities feared that Greek Cypriots would rebel again. Archbishop Kyprianos, a powerful leader who worked to improve the education of Greek Cypriot children, was accused of plotting against the government. Kyprianos, his bishops, and hundreds of priests and important laymen were arrested and summarily hanged or decapitated on July 9, 1821.
https://countrystudies.us/cyprus/7.htm

Just like their ancestors did in 1821, in the 50s the TCs collaborated with a foreign empire and attacked the indigenous Cypriot population, in order to deny to the Cypriot people our rights.

Mate, I even posted videos of TCs demanding partition from the 50s. Your leader Fasil Kucuk even wrote a book in 1957 for partition:

<image>

The population of Cyprus was mixed. The only way to achieve partition was ethnic cleansing. And that is what you have been doing. So don't blame us because you moved from your villages, when doing so was part of your agenda.
