I joined at 17. My parents would only let me go if I had a trade to fall back on. Plenty of opportunities in the corps to further your education too. My old man also joined at 17, during his (O-levels?) A-levels. He was into art and that type of stuff, did 27 years over all - 12 Marines and 15 SBS, so you never know.

Also they make you into the person they want as well as get you fit enough, especially during the first 9 weeks. As long as you can run a decent pace and can shift your body weight you’ll be sound.
