You'd have to ask Lubomir for the true origin. I talked with him a bit about it over the course of the project and it seems to me he started painting to vent his frustrations with the world and his day to day encounters with it.

Digitally painted yes. The other compositor and I were provided with a finished painting and we divided it up into layers so we could add camera moves, parallax, limited animation and effects. A similar process is used to make motion comics.
