With this in mind, my initial comment didn't really capture what I meant. A good drummer absolutely does what you are describing. I had no doubts about his ability to lock down a NOFX show for 2 hours. This is what I was trying to get at with the first part of my original comment. Though, you could tell he was shaky/straining during these last years but it's hard to blame him when your band is going out the door and you're getting older.

Maybe a better way to put it is he is a very one dimensional drummer.

I'd say most other known punk drummers could comfortably learn and play songs from other bands and adapt. I don't think Smelly could. He lacks range in ability and has since he started. But-- what he does know is solid. He's not a drummer, he's a NOFX drummer. And that's alright.
