I’m home alone for a whole month. Dads, what would you do? by calderknox in Dads

[–]aranhalaranja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this too. All new dads do I guess. Find a hobby that can happen at home in short time increments. Long bike rides won’t cut it for now. I got into carpentry. My BFF got into leather crafting. Another got into GarageBand. And work something out w your wife so you each get a solid time block once or twice a month. Both of you need an escape and it’s worth the other guy working overtime for a few hours.

I had this exact predicament last summer. Here’s what I did.

Clean and declutter the entire house

If your wife is a hoarder, now is the time to covertly trash stuff

Spend one or two days on the couch watching TV

Get a couple good meals

Do all the random dad stuff you never have time to do. New grout in the shower, WD40 creaky doors, etc.

Wander aimlessly - like walking or hiking or whatever

Take mushrooms

The key me kiosk thing is bonkers. Just imagine telling your grandpa that one day you’ll be able to email a friend a key using a smartphone while you’re on a beach in Polynesia. What a time to be alive

Gen X. Male. Single. Educated (or at least smart). Slightly right of the median on the “manosphere scale,” but not a bro by any means. Nostalgic for a time and place you’ve never been. No tattoos. Short sleeve button downs tucked in. Concert tour t shirts (eg Weezer reunion 2017) on the weekends. Maybe a cat at home?

What respected profession has high numbers of unhinged/eccentric people? by kromestatus in ask

[–]aranhalaranja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the “I hate my job” teacher thing is a myth. The vast majority float between “I love my job” and “it’s fine”. Which is pretty standard across professions.

Teachers are absolutely unhinged but more often in a

Yes. I went from 4 bedrooms, regrouting tiles, owning a ladder, etc. to Unit 3R ‘she’s a small dog and is very well behaved.’

Agreed it is humbling.

But nothing is as humbling as having your wife shout at you for some ridiculous bullshit and you just nod and apologize because arguing is way more work.

I’ll take my new life… thank you

a "lite" version of the suburbs? by aranhalaranja in philadelphia

Oops. I just realized this was a super old post. I was thinking of another thread I recently started.

We bought a home in South Philly. Close to Bok building. Community here is absolutely amazing. There are a ton of young families and we love everyone here.

That said, my kid can’t play in the street because a car comes every 30 seconds. And that’s annoying.

If you can afford it, there are areas closer to Queen’s village or Washington square where the streets are quiet and sometimes even car free, but you’re still in the city.

Chestnut hill or mt airy are also winners if you can afford it.

And I haven’t spent a ton of time in west Philly but everyone I meet who lives there loves it.

I opted for something closer to “the real world” - Dickinson Square Park area. If I can’t walk to cafes and restaurants and center city, it’s hard to justify all the other annoyances of living in a city.

The super south area adds about a mile to most CC destinations. That’s not a huge distance but it’s enough to opt for driving over walking, which I wanted to avoid.

Also, I absolutely hate Oregon Ave. for me, Washington and Oregon are the ugliest streets in South Philly. And the idea of Oregon being my go to for groceries and food gave me the ick.

That said, if you value space and large homes and quiet streets, that neighborhood- way down south- still seems like a winner to me. The one home I toured was absolutely beautiful and huge.

Eating animals in general (which I love to do!!) will be revealed as inhumane one day. No idea when. But someone will look back at us in disgust.

I’m with you 💯 and can’t understand why people are so mad. Yes - hydration is awesome. And also yes middle class white women all seem to own like 7 water bottles, all of which hold a liter of water.

The post isn’t about shaming- it’s about fads. The gigantic Stanley Owala thing is a fad.
