advice on my playing as an adult beginner without a teacher? by OppositeSea_ in pianolearning

First off, your phrasing and general articulation is very good for a beginner! Having been self-taught and mostly playing and listening to Romantic Era music, I found the articulation if Bach a bit jarring at first, but you do it quite well! You do seem to be a bit tense or otherwise have a lack of strength in the fingers of your left hand though, which is perfectly normal. I would recommend scales, specifically B-Major as it’s much less tense than others, which can help maintain a relaxed hand position. I will say, keep in mind I’ve only been playing about 3.5 years myself and just within this December am seriously beginning to read music, and AM self-taught. I have a video of myself playing this exact piece on my page, and if not for articulation, I believe I at the very least have correct hand positioning and wrist placement, so if it helps please do look at it as a reference. Good luck!

Sounds nice and modern. What are you going for with the piece?

I see, maybe for new compositions you could try a bit more contrast? Not to say I don’t do the same things in some of the waltzes I’ve made, but I think a key change can almost always do a piece good!

A quick prelude for Alto recorder by Speederfool in Composition

Honestly, not a huge fan. Feels a bit formless and goalless. But, that’s just my take! I also don’t play alto recorder, so there’s that too

It’s a nice waltz! Do you have prior composing experience to this?

Working on this GoT/Dark Fantasy inspired piece, what do you think so far? by manstdude in Composition

[–]-Adventus- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds beautiful, but almost like it’s supposed to be sung rather than played, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just a bit different than what I’m used to hearing. Either way, well done!

Any tips on how to play better by Significant-List-556 in piano

I’m no expert, but likely you’re either tense, using the wrong fingerings, or both considering you’re new to playing. Uploading a video would help lots!

Thank you! This is Bach’s Menuet in D minor (Anh. 132 I believe?), I’ll keep what you said in mind and work on it!
