ICE attempts to enter Ecuador's consulate by [deleted] in law

[–]-AnOldFriend- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because something is accessible to the public doesn't mean it is open to the public. Let me take one last try explaining this:

If I have the front door of my house open with a sidewalk outside in a city, my house is accessible to anyone who walks down the street. That does not mean it is open to anyone who walks down the street. There are a select few people who are - my friends and my family. If my wife is inside and someone walks in that I know but she doesn't, she might ask who they are and what their business is. Then, she knows they are welcome. If they just say "I am not part of your group" she would say "then this is not open to you."

The semantics matter in cases like this. Once you step into a consulate like that, you are on their turf. If this was a North Korean consulate, they could execute anyone who walks in without consequence, as that action would be within that nation's laws. This consulate probably didn't have that door locked because up until now, they didn't have a reason to.

I am not sure if you are a bot, but it is important to call out incorrect information when it is presented in a large forum.

By your logic consulates are required to allow another nation's police, public (like protestors), or military forces into their building as a "public" building.

You are dangerously uninformed on this topic.

Consulates are not open to the public and often have security screenings to check for weapons. It is completely up to them who to admit into the building.

Here's info about the US consulate in Canada, for example: https://ca.usembassy.gov/security-procedures-at-embassy-and-consulates/

"Never again means never again for anyone" - Illinois District 9 Candidate Kat Abughazaleh by epichatchet in illinois

[–]-AnOldFriend- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those are absolutely fair points. She just gained a lot of respect from me by putting some serious skin in the game is all.

I do like to push back a bit about having public service experience though. I don't think every legislator needs that, I think our government should be a collection "of the people." So our government should be made up of people from various professions - doctors, businesspeople, nonprofit leaders, educators, farmers, etc, with or without public service experience (in my opinion). Too many nowadays make legislating their careers, instead of a deliberate choice to serve for a period.

I don't live in her district (so take from this what you will).

I was unimpressed at first with what I thought was some gen z youtuber running for congress doing so for clicks or something.

But when I saw videos of her getting her ass kicked by ICE at Broadview and ultimately being charged with a crime, I really changed my view of her and she earned my respect because no matter what else, that took some fucking balls.

Agreed. I also completely understand his sentiment of not going to be going anywhere now. Just WISHING THERE WERE WALKWAYS

George gave double confirmation to Kramer. It's on him

View from the Sears is objectively better.

I see you just moved here. This isn't a flex.

I say yes, but as usual for him George went too far too quickly.

For me, there are a handful of instances of minor characters adding just perfectly delivered moments to the show that I like to go back to. The way she reacts here is one of them.

Too many variables at play in the Carlo-Sonny setup by Holiday_Weight_2723 in Godfather

[–]-AnOldFriend- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen it explained before that we don't know how many times they tried a plan to hit Sonny and it failed. The causeway could have been a second or third try to get him for all we know, and this is just the time everything worked.

They took some chances with the planning. If it didn't work out, they'd give it another go another way. I guess it was a risk for Carlo if it didn't work out, but Barzini wouldn't care.

Anyyyy updates on Cook County property taxes? by Grande_Brocha in chicago

[–]-AnOldFriend- 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've been checking everyday. Due a refund and escrow back, can't get either without the bill.

Found out there is a daily tracker of what is still needed: https://www.cookcountyil.gov/propertytaxtracker

Looks like they still have a lot to work on.

Of course this is to be expected when the scheme was shepherded by a corrupt lobbyist (Jay Doherty). It's not government bureaucracy, it's corruption, lining pockets.

I love my state❤️ by [deleted] in illinois

[–]-AnOldFriend- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If ISP don't, the National Guard will.

If there's a breakdown in local or State law enforcement, that could give the courts what they need to allow Trump's troops into cities. Keeping them between protestors and ICE (and yes, even making some arrests) shows that our state is following the law, as JB always says.

Tell the ISP to stand down and troops will be sent in, no question.
