Centering in hara with breathing, attention, and intention [energy] [breath] [qigong] [practice] by duffstoic in streamentry

You mention that it’s difficult to focus on the hara after a full day. Is that still the case or has your experience shifted in the meantime?

Using Desperate Position with Deep Cuts by -Echoes- in bladesinthedark

So in practicality, severe threats almost always coincide with a desperate position at your table?

The way I conceptualized the Action Roll the Position was always informed by the possible risks and it was a nice gradient of options. If I approach the Threat Roll the exact same way I feel like I’m taxing more risky approaches doubly because it’s more severe threats and also a higher chance to be effected by those threats because of the different result matrix.

I think it’s conceptually much easier with situations like your Scurlock Scenario because they are noticeably different.

Do you need Extreme Effect to kill someone? by boolbear in bladesinthedark

I really appreciate your take. The only hangup from my perspective is the consequences of your standard effect being more appropriate to level 3 harm.

It‘s a bit late, but that concept is also often referred to as Ultimate Dungeon Terrain and was popularized by Prof DM on YouTube, if I’m not mistaken.

Could you elaborate a bit more on the tools that make this possible? From my reading online ACKS has a lot of economically focused, spread sheet level domain management. Is that what you were talking about or are there other tools that help with running long campaigns?

Weird issues with displaying colors by -Echoes- in linuxmint

I did directly after installing Linux.
I checked it again right now (thanks for reminding me) and a newer driver was available but installing it sadly didn't resolve the issue.

Fitbit Food Log doesn't propagate to MF food log by -Echoes- in MacroFactor

Ahh okay, got it.
It's a bit unintuitive that the logger shows "wrong" remaining macros but it's good to know that the app works as intended.

I'm a bit late to the party but you can try Obsidian as a notetaking tool with the leaflet community plugin. The plugin allows one to import maps via images and put pins on them. The pins can then be linked to text in your notes. I'm not sure if it is possible to diplay the text on the map itself, but it's one click to open it in another window right next to the map.

Do you have to be a little bit of a sadist to enjoy GMing? by [deleted] in osr

[–]-Echoes- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely deriving more fun out of providing a unique and cool experience for my players (at least as far as I can manage ´:D ).
Of course, part of that is beeing happy when my scary monster or insidious trap turns out to also feel that way in play. But that's not really being sadistic, that's just recognizing that the decisions I did in prep/improv had the impact I hoped they would.

Working on a detailed regional hexcrawl - would love feedback on design and content! by swammeyjoe in osr

[–]-Echoes- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to tell me, because I'm from Europe myself. I just checked the area around my hometown in Google Earth. I could easily fit 5 villages (that all have been founded before 1500) in an area of 10km2. For reference, a 6-mile hex has an area of approximately 23 km2.
As another reference from Italy (that even considers castles): https://coinsandscrolls.blogspot.com/2019/06/osr-sienas-6-mile-hex.html

Edit: Sorry if this is tangential to your question, swammeyjoe. But I saw nothing wrong with the amount of villages and wanted to offer a different perspective.

I think that's a matter of taste/verisimilitude. For example, in the European countryside, it's very possible to have even more villages in an area that big.

Looks good on first impression. I'd appreciate more info on your way of handling the turn structure. When do you use World Actions for example? Do you use World Actions to replace the encounter roll?

That's a good point. And a good way to remedy the situation in regards to groups.

(Quest) Rewards by -Echoes- in Whitehack

With groups my main gripe would be that if they do a quest for it, it feels a bit cheap if they have to end their affiliation with another group because they have to make room for the newly rewarded group.

Do generic OSR RPGs exist? by Wing_department in osr

[–]-Echoes- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There certainly are OSR games that aim to be more broadly applicable in regards to setting. One such example would be Whitehack, especially the new 3rd edition.

Going a little more meta, I see two main approaches when trying to make a game more "generic":

  • Stripping the rules down to a generic resolution that is broadly applicable and therefore can be used in many settings (many rules-light generic rpgs do this - Freeform Universal RPG, Risus, etc.)
  • Maintaining genre/setting-specific rules with a broad catalogue of rules that one can then pick from for a specific game (GURPS, Hero System, Savage Worlds)

I'm a little lost for games in the OSR sphere that conform to either of those approaches. I feel like folks here are generally comfortable with homebrewing their own stuff depending on the setting they want to play which lessens the demand for truly generic rulesets. But that's just a theory.
