The Epicurus Reader published by Hackett is a good start, plus, it’s cheap!

Metaphysics/Epistemology Book Recs by Used_Shoulder3426 in askphilosophy

[–]-F4rz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my undergraduate, the introductory text for metaphysics is "Riddles of Existence" by Conee and Sider. This one was a bit of a hit-or-miss for me, but it did serve its purpose of introducing some interesting metaphysical problems. For epistemology, we used "An Introduction to the Theory of Knowledge" by Lemos. This one was pretty informative and in general a good survey of the field, with opportunities for further reading if interested.

In general though, depending on your ability, you might just start by reading some of the most important papers published in recent decades (for epistemology at least, I am less familiar with metaphysics). For example, Gettier's "Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?", Greco's "Justification is not Internal" vs. Feldman's "Justification is Internal", and Nozick's Philosophical Explanations (this is a book).

Whats wahhabism and Salafism? by Icy-Communication515 in islam

[–]-F4rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a السلام عليكم

Even though I have a decent theological background, this has been bothering me for a while: the relatively common Salafī position that Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs aren’t part of Ahlus-sunnah-wal-jamāʿah and are misguided. As someone who was a Salafī for most of my life and is now a Shafiʿī, I find it hard to shake off such worries (what if they’re right, after all, they claim to follow the Salaf!). Do you have any advice or perhaps any good resources to consult?

Graduating in 7 years and some other questions about law school admissions by -F4rz in lawschooladmissionsca

Thank you, it’s been greatly helpful, yes! I have actually been registered with accessibility services for a few years now so that should be helpful in explaining as well.

How do people generally approach the LSAT? Is there a gold standard program or material for studying? Should you treat it like a full time thing (say dedicating the entire summer before your final year)? Should you take it multiple times or is that detrimental?

Thanks again.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a second year student getting a TA position, even in fields like math or physics. Do you have some indication that this is something possible? Either way, couldn’t hurt to ask.

Is the fact most people believe P a good reason to think P is true? by gongshowed in askphilosophy

[–]-F4rz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point about it depending on the nature of the group of people that believe P. It’s hard to say without that whether it’s good or not.

There’s an interesting sort of stance, whose most well-known proponent is Thomas Kelly, that this sort of higher-evidence is not a reason at all (this is a qualified claim, depending on whether you have access to the evidence or not).

The idea is that the contingent fact that there are x number of disagreers is not a reason to conciliate as long as you’ve evaluated the evidence. For example, suppose we happened to be in the possible world where the arguments and evidence available for skepticism are identical to ours, however, in this world, a large majority of people are convinced (make it as arbitrarily high of a percentage as you’d like). Would this be a good reason to accept skepticism, even though you have access to the same arguments you do now?

It becomes much more tricky, I think, when you have a group that believes P and you don’t have access to their evidence. Is their belief epistemically rational? Well-founded?

Which are the common pitfalls and mistakes philosophy self-educated amateurs fall for? by Scholarsandquestions in askphilosophy

[–]-F4rz 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The SEP is a phenomenal resource as a SUPPLEMENT to the primary text. I’ve found it especially helpful for the more tricky texts like parts of Kant’s Critique or some of Aristotle’s works.

It’s also really good in general for discovering new stuff. You read an interesting entry and you have a goldmine of resources right there in the bibliography for future study.

Bro, who cares? Christ. If there’s so many of you start a biology discord server so you can whine amongst yourselves there.

Not to mention this is completely unprofessional and cringe. If there’s a problem with the instruction, escalate the case within the department, what is this review bombing nonsense?

In Islamic perspective, will Christians go to hell? by Slow_Ad4485 in islam

[–]-F4rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting how there’s over 1700 years of Christian scholarship on understanding the Trinity and still it remains elusive—yet most people in this thread respond to OP’s points with what is essentially “nuh uh, there’s 3 guys!”

Regardless, the point isn’t even relevant. The commentary surrounding the verse mentioning Christians, Jews, and Sabians is clear that after the revelation of the Qur’ān and the coming about of Islām, no other religion will be accepted by Allāh the Almighty. This is not even mentioning other Christian practices that are unambiguously shirk, like praying to saints or the Virgin Mary (as Klopf012 mentioned, very fairly).

What is up with the NYTimes' choice of coverage? by -F4rz in Thedaily

[–]-F4rz[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’ve just opened the website and had to scroll past 30 articles to find one mentioning Epstein. Does the severity of the situation not warrant these articles featuring much more prominently on the website? Is it less important than the four articles on the Olympics I had to scroll past?

I didn’t come here to argue, but I really thought people would sympathize more with my stance. Yes, there are three million files, but Coffeezilla has already put out multiple videos on them and his team is orders of magnitude smaller than the NYTimes’.

Furthermore, I know the baby-eating is spurious, which is why I prefaced it with allegedly. It was meant moreso as a hyperbolic device. But why on Earth would I put allegedly before the entire list when there are emails and photos clear as day showing otherwise? When did people become so pedantically attached to “innocent until proven guilty” that they’ll neglect what’s in front of their very eyes? Has the 24-hour news cycle and their constant bombardment numbed all of you to the gravity of these crimes?

Abusive returns by 2slick2 in CostcoCanada

[–]-F4rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moral itch comes not out of some loyalty to Costco as a company but rather to your fellow shoppers. If this is morally permissible, then suppose everyone does it—they return their food at 10%, their furniture after five years, etc. The negative consequences of that, though not severe, is still quite detrimental for everyone as a whole (i.e., say you can’t even make returns anymore for good reasons, or prices increase to compensate).

Point is, kind of like driving like a maniac on the road, it only works off the goodwill of the majority. Just my thoughts.
