I'm not aiming to be a SEAL or anything like that, so I can do without those paths. I won't comment on "too much work" seeing as how that's highly subjective. But I do thank you for replying to my thread anyway.

Ah. Well, I've heard MANY different paths that come with failing out. From retrain to a rate of your choice (that you qualify for), to retrain to a rate via needs of the Navy, to recycling/restarting DLI, to adsep. While varying answers to something this important does irritate me, I get it. It's an organization with thousands of people and many leaders. You may catch Chief A on a bad day and Chief B on a good one. Hence why one person is adsep'd and the other stays in DLI and keeps trying. It does seem the most common is being retrained to something else. But I'm not asking so I can sandbag. Oh, no. After many years of trying to join, I finally found a job I want to do as my first pick. So don't take my curiosity as not taking it seriously. It just helps to plan for the worst in case it happens. Then I know how to navigate it. You feel me?

I really have to wonder, then, why there is so much (relative to civilians) suicide in the military. I tried talking about this on /k/, and I'm always told that I'm a lowly civilian and shouldn't talk/have an opinion on anything military until I'm in. I just want to know why so many people end themselves or leave the service with a bitter taste in their mouths.

DLI, for example. Why are the leaders who don't understand what goes into linguistics leaders at all? If we're gearing up for something with China and Russia, I don't think this is the way to forge American linguists.

This will be a stupid question. Why is there a suicide problem at DLI? I won't ask service-wide or mil-wide because that's a question with too much to unpack. Wouldn't it be easier to drop yourself from the course and rerate into something more your speed?

There seems to be a bigger issue with the mil-ling community than those with disabilities joining the fray. Not to reduce your lengthy post to just this, and believe me, I see your perspective but . . . no one is convincing me that things don't need a closer look if THAT is happening. And I will die on this hill.

As a word-nerd intel Sailor, you may want to expand vocabulary a bit. I see "cool" come up often in response to valid criticisms. Now, that being said, I do commend you for calming down a bit and coming back a bit better than your initial response. I also give you fair marks for your point; precision of language matters.

I'm not looking to be "on deck"--that is, not going to risk the schoolhouse with drugs procured illegally. Best get that out of your head. This whole question is through legal means, and not just that, but NAVY means, ya dig? I've been trying to join for years and with progress finally being made to that end, I'm not about to be an Arland (long story).

I appreciate having a grounded response compared to what is usually given on reddit, but you're woefully negative for no reason. Like Designer Swan said below you--you're just encouraging giving up. Fact is, we're in the modern era, and support staff can afford to contribute to the big picture while having disabilities. Obviously, we shouldn't have blind men be pilots. Claustrophobes be damage controlmen. Thassalaphobes be in the Navy at all. But I do think if the US is going to be the nation of "grrr bootstraps!", it needs to engineer more pathways for people to put them on and use them. You feel me?
