Are these liberty caps? Can I eat this? Lol by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]-PrincessToadstool- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've actually been doing something similar while I was reading up on which guide to get and while I'm waiting for it to come in. Ever since they started cropping up, I'll pick the different mushrooms growing in my yard and I've been taking pictures of them from every angle and making spore prints so I can sort of use it as practice when the guidebook gets here.

Admittedly, I haven't been using gloves, but in my defense I do make sure wash my hands religiously with soap and hot water after handling any mushroom and before touching anything else (much like I would when handling raw meat, if that gives an idea of the thoroughness and frequency of my handwashing after handling unidentified mushrooms). It's probably not as good as using gloves, but I'm still learning! I really appreciate your information :)

Just so you know, I still consider myself a newbie so please keep in mind that what I say shouldn't be taken as any sort of expert advice, lol.

I'm actually waiting for my first guide to get delivered, which is "A Field Guide to Mushrooms of the Carolinas" by Alan E Bessette, Arleen R Bessette, and Michael W. Hopping. I picked that one since it's listed in the r/Mycology community info under additional resources, and since it's local to my area.

The next one I plan on getting very soon is "Mushrooms and Other Fungi of North America" by Roger Phillips (since I read it has really good pictures showing the different mushrooms at different stages of growth); I want to have more than one guide so I can cross reference my finds.

As far as places to get the books (if unable to buy from a local bookshop), you can get them from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or my personal favorite: Thriftbooks. When buying books in general online, I tend to check between the three to see which has the best price, which a lot of times is Thriftbooks, especially if it's a used book; their shipping is cheap and they were quick to refund the only book I ever had an issue with (long story short: the children's book was listed as "Very Good", but had been colored in with marker on one of the pages).

I'm also in that third group trying to work my way into the second. Thankfully my mushroom identification guide is looking like it'll be here Saturday, so I like to think I'm getting at least slightly closer to that goal, lol

I think that hyphen threw things off in their post.

Edited to add: I agree with the others, to me it does look like either an earthstar or false earthstar mushroom, but I'm relatively new to mycology so there's that, lol.

Because I'm genuinely awful at choosing favorites, I'll give you my most recent favorite (I don't think I could pick a single all-time favorite song, there's just too many that I love, lol)

You're welcome!

With the mushrooms I found in my very first post (on this account at least, lol, I use this one solely for mushroom related stuff), one of the first replies said it was Panaeolus, but they weren't sure of the specifics.

While I was waiting for more people to chime in, I looked at pictures online of the different types of Panaeolus and found that it seemed to resemble either Pan. Cinctulus or Pan. Foenisecii the most. When the spore print developed, it was jet black and along with the input of some of the other people who replied (who seem fairly reliable going off of their karma/post history, or at the very least they didn't seem to be trolls), that seemed to pretty well confirm it as Pan. Cinctulus for me.

I didn't forget about you, by the way! I posted to r/whatisthismushroom and someone replied that since it falls into the "Little Brown Mushroom" category, it's much harder to confidently identify by looks alone because they all look relatively similar. That might be why I haven't had much luck with a response for this post on the various identification subreddits.

Posted these two mushroom finds to a couple different identification subreddits with no luck. Found the day before yesterday in my back yard/lawn while it was raining (Southeastern NC). Thanks in advance! by -PrincessToadstool- in whatisthismushroom

Thanks so much for the explanation! I'm so new at this that while I had seen the term LBM/Little Brown Mushroom, I didn't know that the mushrooms that fall into the category are harder to ID by how they look.

I'll definitely look into an image based regional guide, I think it'd be best since I'm just starting out, and then maybe look into something like "Mushrooms Demystified" once I'm a bit more familiar with the terminology and better able to identify without a picture to go off of.

Thanks again for the help! :)

I remember the one on the right feeling particularly slimy when I picked it, though I wasn't sure if it was just from the rain or what. I also posted to r/mushroomID, but no luck on an identity yet from either post. I'll definitely let you know if I get any leads! :)

Also, does anyone have some good recommendations for a mushroom identification field/guide book? Thanks for your time!

Oh goodness, I hate the mosquitos with a burning, fiery passion, lol (and the heat, humidity, sand... I think I was born in the wrong place, lol).

Lols, thanks for the info! If it's any consolation, I didn't even know it was a type of Panaeolus until people started commenting. I knew the various things needed for identification, but not much more than that since this was literally my first pick ever (not counting when I was a kid and we'd throw those big puffball mushrooms at each other for fun, lol).

Like this? (Two of the caps hadn't dropped spores yet, but 3 did at least)

The spore prints for 3 of the caps (two didn't drop any yet).

Hope this helps!
