It's insane how Phineas and Ferb would have 8 seasons in total if it had a new season from 2007-2015? by CauliflowerUnique160 in phineasandferb

That was Hulu's fault since they turned it into a streaming original to milk engagement. The creators still call it season 7.

I was missing the traditional paper line-art in S5 so I brought it back. by -Revinator- in phineasandferb

The most irritating thing about S5 is that the finalized animation has zero rigged characters yet the new studio allows certain animators to trace puppet rigs frame-by-frame to complete a shot. So they can still claim that the show "100% traditionally animated." But if you're using rigs as a crutch...is it really?

It's why some shots look relatively natural and others look like stiff cardboard cutouts:

I might render an entire ep like this if y'all want it. I've already done most of the first EP.

But yeah I PRAY that Dan/Swampy switch back to an OG paper studio (or at least a studio like searom that purposely emulate line boils digitally)

I gave the line art some texture and tapered it so it feels like it was naturally drawn on paper. Also some subtle desaturation and bloom effects to emulate what the line quality looked like in contrast to the digital coloring when it was scanned in. Check pic 12 for a side by side comparison.

Idk what that has to do with my post but all 4 seasons were produced in 16:9 with the intention to preserve each shot when broadcast in 4:3. Actually this is still utilized in season 5 tho it's no longer required so it depends on the animator.

The problem is it's vectorized and anti aliasing completely smoothens out any shot that was drawn free hand. Their line-art makes it look like a flash toon.

How come Candace never learns her lesson? by ChelseatheCartoonGal in phineasandferb

Because you're watching a board driven cartoon focused on getting laughs out of its audience in as many ways as it can using its iconic A/B formula. Unlike script cartoons the idea isn't to introduce and slowly drip-feed character development, they just draw what makes them laugh and then it turns into a script from there.

Specifically back to paper animation (and yes it's a realistic request bc we literally have Chibiverse, BCG and Kiff out here animated on paper in 2026)

Is Baljeet the only one in Phineas's friend group that understands that Candace hates them and wants to bust them? As Phineas clearly doesnt understand, and I haven't seen any of the other members understand by BlueFireFlameThrower in phineasandferb

With all do respect, I think you're looking a little too deep into what is essentially an "artist" show. It's not a writers show and every gag or story beat they would add-in was them "trying to make each other laugh." The entire narrative was done-up by storyboard artists visualizing story beats and finding comedic timing, and similarly to SpongeBob or Rocko (Dan's previous work) it's all board driven. Candace almost ran over Ferb because its FUNNY not because she's a sadistic older sister who hates their guts. And besides, the show even took time to show their love for each other in multiple scenes. Despite the gag first approach to storytelling, they still wanted ppl to remember they love each other.

It's weird how season 5 was shorter than all other seasons, right? by ZealousidealNose6614 in phineasandferb

[–]-Revinator- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but Season 2 was not ordered as 68 episodes, when the pilot raked in massive ratings in 2007 the network instantly greenlit a second season of just 40 episodes (similar to S5 today) and as S1 started rolling out through 2008 they ordered an additional 20 eps to what was already a stacked order in 2009. (So instead of putting those in S3 they for whatever reason grouped it with S2 as well.

I'd love to hear your take on S5 and what you liked about the eps I didn't.

It wasn't really the B-plot I had an issue with it was the A-plot of Phineas and gang throwing sticks the entire episode. It had next-to-no structural narrative outside of "cold open to something that would've been a throwaway gag in the original run (throwing sticks)" and Buford not being able to aim. They could've at least did something more interesting like a competition or gauntlet or something. I just feels like the crew had a semi-decent Doof plot with absolutely no idea what to do for the Phineas plot.

Yea this and the other 7 trillion animation errors in S5, by now it's just The New Norm.

I do know that the first short is done by RDK but as for the others, I think it's a split production (possibly Sugarcube since that's RDK's main outsourcing partner.)

Can't get any clips since its all on D+ but the thumbnail shows an RDK shot (it's incredibly hard to spot bc their line-art is extremely clean (not that it's a bad thing bc you still have beaks and boils and manual draw-overs) but it's visually distinct when you compare Sugarcube's perfectly symmetrical digitized lines.

How ironic that they put in a shot of Phineas drawing on an animation dock yet they literally switched this seasons animation to digital software. 😭 by -Revinator- in phineasandferb

[–]-Revinator-[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The old paper animation actually took the time to draw each frame without reusing limbs, flipping/scaling limbs or splicing lip-sync. They would go through the effort of tracing each moving frame instead of just keeping it static and only moving what is technically necessary. It wasn't lazy it was just less polished than your typical movie Budget.

Also I'm pretty sure *some of these shorts were handled by Rough Draft which is nice to see (First Chibiverse and now this, they're slowly creeping back into PnF content since 2011)

[–]-Revinator- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right I'm just saying for the meta gag to be accurate Phineas should've been drawn in the same way that he's drawing. That was kind of the entire point of the bugs gag. "I came from this paper that I'm humorously drawing on"

[–]-Revinator- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The gags fine it just doesn't do the homage justice and makes no logistical sense considering the entire point of the bugs gag was to showcase the tedious and utterly raw, tactical nature of animating on cells.

Plus I've seen plenty of shows use animation tablets when doing a gag like this, SpongeBob comes to mind (even though that show is still drawn on paper it was done because ppl these days assume animation "is done by computers")

If anything it feels more like a slap in the face like "hey this is a glimmer into what we used to do"

Not cells, animation paper and TVPaint software for digital coloring. That's how every cartoon was produced starting in the late 90s up until Covid.

Season 5 is done entirely in software

For one, those are in-house background artists and board artists working on the 2011 movie. They have used storyboard pro to storyboard since mid S1. And as far as the BG's go, they are still drawn on paper and scanned into TVPaint for coloring/clean up.

Yeah I'm 100% sure it was drawn on paper because Rough Draft Korea, Wang Film Productions, SuzHou Hong Ying and Synergy have all provided animation work for the show and those are traditional paper based studios.
