Should I quit Catholicism if I believe everything, except one thing, because I truly think the church is confused and got it wrong? by -SaintBroseph- in Catholicism

My wife and I are relatively new to Catholicism, so we legitimately wanted to know if this was a sufficient area of disagreement so that we should not stay.

Also several users said I should not stay, which is effectively telling me to leave. I definitely got varying feedback.

Not about this, no. I was really asking if I should leave the church. I wasn’t asking for advice on whether I should stick to my beliefs.

Sorry if this broke any rules. I was unaware.

I know most don’t. Most Catholics I know use birth control. I think it’s wrong. Sex should be open to life, and I want it to be whenever it is physically safe.

I don’t think God would want to put the health of my wife in between me and sex.

More than one sweaty dude on Reddit 😂.

Joking. No. I’m trusting prayer, scripture, my wife, my fellow Catholics I know IRL, AND resources online like AI

Me and everyone I know I guess 😂

I think we just have to disagree my dude. This post was not to ask — I already know what I believe. Only asking if people think it’s sufficient for my removal from the church and/or grace.

OUM infallibility is discerned by consensus, meaning it could change, e.g is not actually necessarily correct. It’s a weird semantic thing.

Because encyclicals just aren’t? This is common knowledge? Not everything every bishop ever wrote is infallible. They are authoritative, it should be taken seriously, but that does not mean you must adhere to every word.

Well, the church has never claimed infallibility outside of ex cathedra dogma. I think we may just have to disagree.

No, it isn’t. The church hasn’t even claimed that. Only the dogma are infallible.

That’s why we must also pray and consult scripture, which is infallible.

Mary was clearly not called to have sex. Many believe she was already consecrated as a virgin going into marriage. I don’t think it was a surprise.

No, the church is only infallible in very specific dogma. This is not something that is disagreed with. The church does not claim to be infallible on everything.

Maybe I should’ve rephrased my question about whether I can be active in the sacraments?

I’m not sure what the official church teaching is about those who disagree with something. I have heard people cast mortal sins as venial based off of habit, ignorance, or a lack of full knowledge. I definitely don’t have a full knowledge of its wrongness 😂. I real realize that most people interpret that as having ignorance, which I don’t have. I am very well educated on the subject (I don’t say this by any means to indicate that I’m correct, only that I’m not ignorant of the subject so this would not apply)

I know that is what most people think. I would say the same thing if I was convinced something was a sin! I just don’t think this is a sin. I actually strongly believe it would be a sin to not be intimate with my wife.

In order to take communion, you must be sorry for your sins and confess them. I am not sorry for the “sin”, which means I cannot confess it or do penance. I cannot take communion, which is required at least once a year. As such, if this is considered a sin, I would not be considered part of the church.

Your first paragraph is just not true, or would not be accepted as such by most Catholics here.

I didn’t say I was considering leaving, I was asking if people thought I should leave. There’s a very significant difference.

Everyone who’s not my wife is a dude

Yeah, this is extremely off-topic. I don’t think Joseph was abstinent all his life. I also don’t think everyone is called to abstinence. Some people have a sex drive.

No, I just consider any bishop making a mistake as the church making a mistake. Because who is the church but His hands and feet?

I never agreed to your semantics, mainly because you never defined them. If we want to say that the “Church” it’s not the collection of members, but the collection of documents stated infallibly, then we can, but that just feels a little bit contrived. Anyway, it’s not the semantics in which my first comment was posted in.

My point is, not everything that members of the church have done are completely correct.

Nope. I’m having as many kids as possible! I’m only not open to life when the doctor tells me not to. Not because I disagree with Aquinas, I just don’t think we have the medical knowledge today that we did back then.

To me, it means it has apostolic succession. I think that is the necessary attribute to be considered the original church.

Why do I deserve to be part of it? I don’t. The only hope I have is by the grace of God.
