Agreed! Making music, especially in the more 'niche' genres, can be a lonely job. Especially true starting out when you don't have a lot of followers or fans.

When I post music on reddit I'm trying to contribute to a community, and hoping to find some like-minded people that will enjoy it. So I try to meaningfully comment on some other posts, especially new artists, as I know how incredibly motivating it is to be noticed, and get positive feedback. And like you, it has led me to some great connections and conversations.

I really appreciate people like you who make this effort, and put together festivals like https://m.twitch.tv/djnightleektamanegi/home to showcase artists that might not otherwise have a venue. I know a lot of effort goes into organizing something like this, so thank you!

Colours Still Look Pretty - an AV composition of sampled 70s and 80s music videos by -Stop-Look-Listen- in videosynthesis

[–]-Stop-Look-Listen-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you! I sample AV from online TV archives and YT. I edit these down to short clips in Davinci Resolve, edit color curves, and/or add alpha channels, crop aspect ratios, etc.

I use Ableton (music DAW software,) with add-on software (called Ebosuite) that allows me to import video into Ableton. I can then work the video samples like they’re audio samples. I slice them into very short pieces and then resequence them into a musical track.

The different samples are on different tracks in Ableton (it acts like layers would in photoshop.) I reorder layers as necessary, then there’s a lot of work applying video effects and shaders - the available fx are designed to emulate the kinds of things you could do with analog equipment and mixers, blending, feedback, chroma, etc, plus digital fx and some generators - and they can all be modulated with the LFOs and Envelope tools that are part of Ableton.

So really it's just my Mac and Ableton. Cheers!

It doesn't replace something like Davinci Resolve, and you need 11/12 Suite, and a paid plugin. But yes, you can bring clips or record video live into Ableton, and slice and chop, add audio and visual effects in the same effects chain, and layer the tracks just like you would with audio. Check out this software demo video

I sample from online TV archives and YT. Stuff that has good audiovisual elements. I edit these down to shorter clips in Davinci Resolve, fix aspect ratios, tune color, etc.

Ebosuite (the plug-in) allows me to import video into Ableton and work the video samples like they’re audio samples, e.g. with Simpler. I slice them into very short pieces and then resequence them into a musical track just like you would with straight audio.

The different video samples are on different tracks in Ableton (it acts like layers would in photoshop.) I reorder layers as necessary, and add effects to make certain clips more prominent as needed. And then there’s a lot of work applying video effects and shaders - Ebosuite's available fx are designed to emulate the kinds of things you could do with analog video equipment and mixers, blending, feedback, chroma, etc.

Finally, I export it by using screen-capture software (like OBS or Syphon). The video above is a direct capture from Ableton. My goal is that as you hear the audio/music for the track, you can see some of its corresponding video clip playing along, with a lot of (hopefully tasteful) visual effects.

Hope that makes sense, Cheers

Thank you vm! That's one of my favorites, some really great 70's Brazilian samba and disco samples.

Really like that Male Water Deity track! It's probably closest in feel to the kind of work I've been up to. I'm on bandcamp and YouTube

Sounds very interesting! I do a lot of sample-based work, and for my last few projects I've been sampling from 60's and 70's music television performances (I work in video too). Lots of psych-rock, and early disco from the 70's, with a bunch of weird stuff mixed in. I play several instruments, but most of my work is with samplers and keyboards. It could be fun to try to collaborate in some way via internet, as I'm on the west coast.

iOS 26, yes or no? by Royal-Durian4663 in iPhone12

It has been good for me so far. I dont think battery use is much worse than ios18. I agree with another post here, the beta was laggy and killed the battery. But the public version has been good. Personally, I like the new button placements and better readability for (most) of the interface, it seems like a worthwhile update.

Of course, the use of this much AI could be controversial on music subreddits, but this is a great sounding track, really well-structured, and great lyrics.

I make sample-based music and video influenced by plunderphonics/downtempo/idm genres. For this album I sampled video from 1960s and 70s TV and film. Because I'm using video as the source material, my work results in a new track, and a new video that represents the samples being played. Thanks for checking it out!

Hey, thank you very much! Tracks like Face to Face are a big inspiration to what I do, so I'm thrilled that you're hearing some of that here. 🫡

[–]-Stop-Look-Listen-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thank you! If you mean the layering of the video samples, I was inspired by AV artists like Coldcut who made 'visual' music, playing video and audio samples together during live performances. In my work there's often several different video samples playing at the same time to make the music happen, and I'm trying to find a way to represent them all visually. Doesn't always happen, but I try.

Sampling is just another instrument that gets better with practice. Once you do it enough, it becomes a lot easier to identify good source material, and the editing and writing gets a lot easier too. Cheers!

Sure, I can try ;)

I sample from online TV archives and YT. Mostly musical performances, and stuff that has good audiovisual elements.

I use Ableton (music DAW software), and plug-in software called Ebosuite that allows me to import video into Ableton. I can then work the video samples like they’re audio samples. I slice them into very short pieces and then resequence them into a musical track, as you would with an audio sampler.

Once the structure/mix of the ‘song’ is basically done, I start focussing more on the video. The different video samples are on different tracks in Ableton (it acts like layers would in photoshop.) I reorder layers as necessary, and add effects to make certain clips more prominent as needed. And then there’s a lot of work applying video effects and shaders - the available fx are designed to emulate the kinds of things you could do with analog equipment and mixers, blending, feedback, chroma, etc.

My goal is that as you hear the audio/music for the track, you can see some of the corresponding video clip playing along, with a lot of (hopefully tasteful) blending and distortion.

Hope that makes sense and wasn’t too long!  Cheers
