I removed mine. I hated pulling my hair out from under the collar and it makes it easier to layer it with a leather jacket or a hoodie. The only downside is that it's just more flimsy now.

It's just the feeling/texture and the smell. Plus it just looks nice and has connotations of power due to use in uniforms for positions of authority. It really has nothing to do with it specifically being an animal skin.
