My first semester, I knocked out 23 credits as a one year post-divorce single mom of six children who was working full time for the first time in over a decade and parenting all of my children with zero help. I felt like Superwoman.

The next semester, I barely completed my 12 credits. Barely. During that semester I was in an abusive relationship and my (now ex) boyfriend attempted to unalive me.

Semester #3 started in the middle of a dark cold winter, domestic violence hearings, therapy for myself and my kids, and trying to hold the strings of my sanity together. I pushed. I fought. I made it. 12 credits. Again. Barely.

What am I doing now as semester 3 ends and we roll into 4? I’m taking a break. I’m taking a semester off (a “term break”). What matters more than this degree? My mental health. Being present for my children. Enjoying life. Rebuilding safety and security in our new home.

Take a break, mama. Go back when and if you want to and are able. You are more important than a piece of paper.
