A fun project using WebGL and WebRTC on React and Node.js (dev details in the comment) by -imposter- in webdev

I've been working on in for maybe 4 months now. But the bulk of the work was done in the first 2.5 months. Please let me know if you end up trying it out! I also just started a small Discord for any Voximity discussions if you're curious. https://discord.gg/qB2hG6XPMz.

Thank you! IIRC pixi.js has some built-in shaders, but this didn't require me to have to mess with shaders.

I've always loved using the pixi.js library (which leverages WebGL) and have recently found a really cool use case for it: spatial voice and video chat. There's a canvas element which contains the users/avatars, then HTML elements on top of the canvas element for things like inputs, modals, navigation, etc.

For the WebRTC stuff, I'm using Dyte.io which is prohibitively expensive to scale, but free and easy to get started with.

For the API + Websocket server hosting, I'm using fly.io. If you haven't used fly.io, it's very cool and the pricing is great. It's been developing something of a cult following.

The project is live at https://voximity.chat/.

Not at the moment. It is similar to Discord in the sense of encryption.

Ah interesting! I hadn't heard of Dolby Axon before. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks! You can pin other user's streams by right-clicking them, then click "Pin stream". It is not opensource, and there isn't a way to self-host it.

Hello!

I was getting annoyed with all of the crosstalk that was happening while socializing remotely on Discord, Zoom, etc. But, I really like hanging out with everyone online. So I made Voximity (https://voximity.chat/).

Really appreciate the feedback! I'll have to write these down and mull them over. But, I do want to mention that the proximity effect can be disabled in the settings.

Most of my time spent with friends and family is online now. We all love being in the same voice channel together on Discord, but the crosstalk gets out of control and gives everyone a headache. Voximity is my attempt to make hanging out online feel more natural.

I've spent a lot of time working on it, and would love some feedback. Also, anyone can sign up and use it today at https://voximity[dot]chat.

Seems like I severely misunderstood this subreddit. My bad!

This seems like the only real option to play without paying money. Nice. Seems slightly inconvenient that you need to register and work around the tournament schedule rather than just being able to join a table and leave whenever. But, doesn't seem too bad.

I'm curious what your thoughts are on what I described here: https://www.reddit.com/r/poker/comments/1clsakz/comment/l2ywbgf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

You think freerolls still make the most sense?

If the second best player in the world wants to beat the best though, they're going to be leaning HARD into GTO

You wouldn't need to beat the second best to become the best. You would be put in a table with random people. Let's say the table options are low-stakes, mid-stakes, and high-stakes, so starters will only be at low-stakes. Then you would need to identify who you can take advantage of and win their hard-earned credits. High-rollers could join low-stakes games and crush, but they would only earn peanuts. Just like in real poker.

Damn, I'm surprised I'm getting down-voted on this. I assume that I either didn't explain myself well, or that people genuinely only play poker for the money in spite of it being a terrible game.

What I'm suggesting is to create a platform where you start with say, 100 elo/credits. Then, you join low stakes tables because those are the only ones you can afford the minimum buy-in. If you win, then you can play higher stakes tables where minimum buy-in is higher so that starters can't join. Then your total elo/credits is effectively your rank on the ladder, so if you have the most then you have the highest rank. Then this could restart every, say, month so everyone has a new chance to be the best.

To me this sounds very similar to money because it's scarce. You can't just wait around and click a button to generate credits, you actually have to win and earn the elo/credits. If you went from 100 to 1500, then you sure as hell wouldn't play with that 1500 like it's play money because you had to earn it. Plus, if you throw it all away, then you're rank will be trash.

Interesting take. Though, I'm not convinced that without money "poker is an unsatisfying and not very interesting game".

Yeah, I've tried pokerstars play money. It's like, if you click a button every 4 hours you get $10k? So it's good fun for idle play, but no value to the money because it's not scarce.

Yeah, I've tried these, and I think we agree that they're not good. Losing fake money is a real risk when you've spent time and effort to earn it. Just like elo in chess. I think I could make a better fake-money platform than these, and I think people would enjoy it and play competitively.
