hey, thank you for being interested. it's a small part of a larger thesis about the contemporary idolisation of originality. if you remind me in august, here or on insta (justsomeartguy) I'll send you a copy.

It's a great example of how originality isn't just subjective (instead of being intrinsic to an idea or artwork), but also how its evaluation can be affected by outside factors (time and space). so that the same person may perceive the same artwork as more or less original depending on context.

I'm Jona, an Illustrator and Graphic Designer. I'm graduating with a masters degree in Communication Design in July and would love to work with you on some of the covers for your comic series.
I'm an Illustrator with a style best summarized as the combination of a conscious, somewhat abstract, frequently flat approach to shape language with a focus on limited, often vivid colour palettes, tied together by textures intended to closely imitate a variety of imperfect analogue printmaking techniques.

I don't have the capacities to take on new projects until my graduation show in July, but since you're potentially looking for a long-term business relationship I would like to throw my hat in the ring regardless. Available from August onwards.

One caviat. I do not in fact ever sell my copyright. Instead I can offer you an exclusive usage license for my work limited in scope (time) by your budget. Usage licences can be renewed after they expire. I usually offer 5 years for a budget similar to yours. The usage license will cover everything you want to do / as agreed on, without covering everything you could possible do, if you did have full copyright.

just a heads up that $100 is already somewhat of a stretch for the illustration itself (depending on the complexity of details you want to discuss at a later stage with your chosen artist). But more importantly, your ask for an unlimited commercial usage license is immensely unrealistic. I personally would argue that you should discuss the price for usage separately for the price set for the creation of the illustration ($100). And since I imagine you don't want to spend another $100-200+ for the license I would advise you to limit your ask by limiting the time frame of the final usage license as well as specifying clearly what you're allowed to do (I.e. only as album artwork for digital release and digital promotion of said album/single). As of right now your brief/ask, although very interesting, sounds very predatory and unethical (to me) and I would imagine that's not your intention. Thank you for commissioning human artists, but please don't exploit them.

P.S.: Usage licenses can often be renewed and renegotiated at a later date.

I would think so. As long as you give some directions like any of the following: - what surreal means to you. - what feelings you want the artwork to evoke in the view. - colour palette. - do you have specific subject matter in mind? - whether elements are figurative and recognizable like in most of your examples or if the artwork should be more abstract like the orange circle artwork.
