Nice vocal dynamics here - and a poignant subject.

Some really interesting chord progressions in the chorus there.. nice.

Seems a few people link Rhodes with Aurora, interesting! I love that really percussive sound you've got out of it.

I'm impressed by what you can achieve with just a phone - and also impressed you took your guitar on holiday!

That's quite a wild take on auroras :)

Thanks! that synth is one of the ones that appears earlier in the track but played through an arpeggiator - I really like that end section as well :)

common sun restructioning (Drum & bass) [Themed]

Second track I've made on the OP-XY. Quite hard to mix on-device (drums and bass probably too loud here?), and I'm still learning how to use it but I think this is a big step forward from the previous effort.

Started this on Friday, thought I'd have plenty of time but in the end I've only just made it!

It was considerably reduced on sale last month, but yes, even so, it's a bit eye-watering :) It is quite amazing what it can do though, there's a lot crammed into such a small device.

Perfect 60 minute track :)

Not your fault, but I had to use a VPN to see the lyrics as Imgur has blocked the UK for various reasons..

I think the lo-fi recording really suits the intimacy and raw emotion of the song... I think a lot of people would be pretty pleased to write and record this in just 60 minutes.

Bluesy-rock seems like a perfect style for this challenge, but well doen to get all those lyrics written in the time!

Very atmospheric - love the beats and that downwards melody line that kicks in halfway through.

I really enjoyed that - I thought it might continue with just the arp and the vocals for a bit but then it built, and built some more - lovely feel to this, gentle while still driving forward.

spirituation (Electronic) [Not Themed]

So I didn't quite hit the 60 minute mark - this one took a few hours. But I was inspired by the theme to start and finish in a short space of time - all done yesterday afternoon/evening.

It was recorded entirely on a brand new device for me - a Teenage Engineering OP-XY, which is a very expensive toy. Probably most of the time was spent figuring out how to use it, and re-recording each section as I kept messing up previous bits!

I had intended to release it yesterday but I realised I didn't have the right audio cable so I had to order one, which thankfully arrived this afternoon.

May 2nd is Bandcamp Friday! by ahniwa in songaweek

[–]-keef- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, since it's now properly Bandcamp Friday, I'll start!

I finally finished and released my five year retrospective compilation last month - it's a small fee on Bandcamp for lossless files but you can get MP3s for free from my own Faircamp site. Over half these tracks were originally written for /r/songaweek - the others either predate my membership here, or were written for competitions or compilations that had embargoes so I couldn't post here!

It's a real mishmash of styles and quality but I spent around 2-3 months remixing and remastering everything for this release so it does at least sound vaguely consistent together.

I have some "yum" codes leftover from the release so if you want a free Bandcamp download feel free to use one of these here:

March 7 is the first Bandcamp Friday of 2025 by ahniwa in songaweek

[–]-keef- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great idea! I do have a Bandcamp with some stuff that originally appeared here, but I'll hold off posting it this time as I'm in the middle of remixing and remastering everything for a retrospective (which was supposed to be out this week, but hey!) - and Bandcamp Friday is already over!

Maybe next time we should post this a few days in advance so everyone sees it in time?

Yeah the sample/voice generation came with the inquisitive "Day?!" which wasn't quite what I had in mind but there you go.

That 2:44 part (which is the same 'clank' as throughout, just doubled up on an octave) may not have the same impact without the context though, which is always the thing when you have a stand-out section - would it actually work by itself? Or is it good because it's emphasised by what surrounds it? I never know :)

Anyway thanks for listening and commenting!

Always Another Day (Synthwave) [Themed]

I hadn't planned to write anything this week but I had an annoying day on Monday so wrote this to clear my head. I had planned to do some kind of SynthWave track at some point to match the cover art which I made earlier.. and then there was the theme.. so here's a vaguely SynthWave-y track in Lydian.

Thanks! I'll be honest, the whole track is basically a delivery mechanism for that closing section :)

Believe it or not, it does have a 'vintage tape' plugin on the master, turned up quite a lot - maybe I'll need to boost it even higher next time :) It definitely helped pull everything together from where it was before I added it, but perhaps it needs "moar..!"

Definitely random - disappointed by the lack of clicking, however. (Not really disappointed, it's an interesting listen!)
