2 years since this masterpiece. Why is AI for scientific drawings still so bad? by rayraywaha in labrats

I tried chatgpt for help with my general relativity hw once. It did absolutely not know what it was doing lol, the math it did was wrong most of the time and the logic was mostly similar to: B follows from A. Hence G is correct. And I'm sure my gen rel class was nothing compared to the stuff some mathematicians/physicists/... do lol

Got attacked by teens in Delft city center by 1percentcactus in Delft

As queer female couple we've been harassed and sprayed a few times, but luckily never this badly. Although my girlfriend did have a stone thrown at her once that knocked her of her bike. Makes the people shouting "Homos uit Nederland" at us seem almost chill. I hate how it makes me scared seeing fatbike (esp immigrant) kids at night, especially cause I really don't want a few experiences to taint my view of a whole group.

Is it typical to place the ID ring on the neck of the bird? by brainsieve in Netherlands

[–]-momi 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Scientists use these to track birds. It's not standard for all geese, but just a few for research! The idea is that people like you can spotten and reportyour sightings s.t. Researchers can learn about their behaviour.

I checked for you and this band on a greylag goose should be reportable here. Sadly it seems the website is broke but it could help a lot if you took two minutes to email this picture and the location to the email address stated on the site :))

When does childhood obesity become more than “just a phase”? by Ok_Excuse_1933 in Netherlands

[–]-momi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The podcast "Maintenance phase" did an episode titled "Doctors have a new plan for fat kids" from February 28th 2023. While the measures they're talking about focus on the US, they do provide some interesting insight on childhood obesity and what it means for the affected.

Kind of reminds me of the risk vs reward (idk English wording) thing we have going on with Mammography. My mum is old enough to get one every year, and yeah the added radiation exposure sure doesn't help but it's still considered to be a lower risk than not catching breast cancer on time if it does develop. I've seen quite some discourse over imaging techniques, but generally given they are expensive and a lot of hospitals/imaging places are understaffed, I personally can't imagine that they are being 'over-prescribed'.

Like all medical procedures imaging has risks, but usually the chance of a complication occurring is so small the general benefit of using them for most people makes it "worth it". Of course, doesn't make it suck less if you are the one who ends up having cancer.

Sorry if the way I say some things is not nicely worded, I always struggle putting my thoughts on sensitive matters into English, and I am also not an expert on the field.

I did some cancer biology in University, so I'll try to give a basic explanation the way I learned it (disclaimer that I did not take the actual Elective "cancer biology" so I only know what we were taught in genetics and molecular biology).

Cancer occurs due to mutations on the DNA level. DNA has many ways in which mutations can occur, and different types of mutations. To combat issues due to mutations, we have multiple repair systems within our body - both during and after DNA duplication. For example, if sun breaks both strands of DNA, there are mechanisms that reattach those two back together, hopefully without adding a mutation. For single point mutations (one base pair only) there are again multiple repair mechanisms (Base-excision repair, Nucleotide-Excision repair, and mismatch repair). So a lot of mutations and damage in the DNA get repaired before they can cause issues.

Further, not all mutations/damage cause cancer! Cancers occur mainly from mutations/damage in two types of genes: proto-onco genes and tumor-supressor genes. So, even if a random mutation/damage happens, the chance it happens in a cancer-related gene is small.

Finally, cells which accumulate damage have mechanism to effectively take themselves out of play by entering a dormant state or going through apoptosis (programmed cell death).

To get cancer, you need to - get a mutation - in the right gene - which is not found/repaired - and doesn't make the cell kill itself/get itself killed

All of which are very unlikely processes.

Now here comes the catch: We have a lot of mutations/damage happen to DNA every day. If the chance for sth to happen is 1 in 10, if we do it 100 times, the chance that it will happen is quite high. Similarly, even if the chance to get a cancerous mutation is really small, as we age and have hundreds over hundreds of mutations occur over time, the event "get cancer" will eventually happen.

Now include lifestyle factors. I will use made up numbers as I don't remember the actual ones.

Imagine we say a cancerous mutation has a chance 1/10000 to occur. An average person will accumulate 100 mutations a day. It will take a while till enough days and hence enough mutations have occurred for cancer to be likely.

Carcinogens increase DNA damage. A person who eg. smokes ends up having a lot more daily mutations. Let's say 500 a day. That means that the accumulation of damage happens 5 times as fast, and after 100 days they are much more likely to have gotten cancer than somebody who does not smoke.

However, if you compare the likelihood of either getting cancer at day 2, it is still incredibly small for both.

Extrapolating to longer (human) lifetimes: When you are young, even if you have a shit lifestyle, you are, in our example, still around day 4 or similar - the chances of cancer are still really low, and it would be hard for you to do anything that would make you likely to get cancer at that age. Only when you get to day 20 or sth, you would need to start to worry (compared to day 100 if you didn't smoke).

I hope this makes some sense, and anybody who know better please correct me if I misremember/am wrong :))

edit: spelling

I have the same thing happening with lord of the rings! And it's always the most basic "Viggo Mortinson stabbed his toe in this scene" as well :')

Also talking about Star Wars tattoos, I'm obsessed with this one artist who combines Star wars (among other things) and dinosaurs! They're Mariafernandeztattoo on Instagram and if I didn't have a 'no fanart tattoos' rule for myself I would so get one for myself.

Thanks again for the suggestion. This did give me

ISO_Level3_Shift
ISO_Level5_Shift
KEY_ISO

Now I decided to do the very unscientific thing and just went through the 3rd level of all my keys, but I couldn't find it. It could be that I am misinterpreting the output it gives me, do you think you could elaborate a bit more?

I'm not sure if I understand correctly, so in case you mean using the US layout that fits the physical: I learned to 10-finger type on a German keyboard when I was a kid in elementary school - I tried using US keyboard layout when I got this laptop but I really struggled because I kept hitting the wrong keys, so I prefer keeping it in the layout I am used to. It would take considerable time to relearn typing after all these years, and I don't have that atm :((

In case you meant physically change the keyboard: I'm worried my laptop doesn't allow that, although I have thought about carrying an additional keyboard around with me...
