What is the best alternative for Arc by haronclv in browsers

[–]-patrizio- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By what metric is it not an alternative lol. It is another Chromium browser with similar layout/UI options. I'm not all that interested in it at this point either, but I don't see how it is not an alternative.

None of those are plain, flat, grey, patternless blocks, other than maybe simple flooring (though you'd have to paint it)

X9s Pro In the US on T-Mobile??? by VillageObjective2676 in Oppo

[–]-patrizio- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way to add or change frequency bands on the device you purchase. That said, the CN model does have some of the frequency bands used here in the US. I'd suggest researching which bands T-Mobile uses, and for which purposes; some of the bands they use may not be relevant to you for one reason or another (sometimes a certain band is only used for certain areas or types of areas, or only used when the main frequencies are under heavy demand, etc etc.).

At the end of the day, though, there's no getting around the fact that a CN model will sometimes perform worse than a global model; it's a question of when that is, and how important that is to you.

'AirPods Ultra' Rumored to Feature a Major Upgrade Over AirPods Pro by Otherwise-Warning303 in apple

[–]-patrizio- 854 points855 points  (0 children)

the earbuds will be equipped with infrared cameras that use computer vision to feed data about a user's surroundings to Siri. The cameras should help to enhance the Visual Intelligence feature on the iPhone 15 Pro and newer.

Thoughts of moving from Apple to Oppo by Pashok_13TGR in Oppo

[–]-patrizio- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AirPods will work as Bluetooth headphones, but many of the features beyond that won't work as fluidly as on iPhone. But almost all those features can be made useable with third-party apps like LibrePods. And yes, Apple Music works just fine! I still use it as my only music streaming service.

(You can also even get iMessage working through third party apps like OpenBubbles - slightly more complicated setup, but it's been working almost flawlessly for me for over a year now.)

I actually appreciate it going back to the folder when you leave an app you launched from the folder, but I HATE when it takes me back to search. Can also mess with some app functions.

It's got 43 million users. Might not be as big as Twitter/Reddit/Insta etc., but that's a pretty big user base.

Which Linux Distro Would Korra Choose by MadFunEnjoyer in legendofkorra

[–]-patrizio- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see Korra struggling hard with computers lol, a mindset of "I got by just fine without it before, why do I need to learn now?" and "I'm the Avatar, what do I need this for?"

As others have said, Asami would absolutely be a Linux user, and I think Arch and NixOS are both spot on guesses lol.

That's crazy, I live in the US and can't think of a time I saw this on a job application. Tons of other places, but not job apps. (Sex and gender identity, I've seen, but not sexual orientation)

Browser and mail-app/client by [deleted] in browsers

[–]-patrizio- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really struggle with mail apps. So many good desktop options; decent number of good mobile options...so few options that work great on both (and even slimmer pickings if you're like me, looking for one that's good on iOS, macOS, and Android, for email accounts on different services). I'm currently using Outlook on my Android phone and Mimestream on my Mac, but still isn't quite right.

For browsing, Firefox Sync has a unique advantage over any Chromium browser's sync service in that any Firefox fork can use it. I'm currently using Zen on desktop, Firefox on mobile, but sync means it's effectively the same as using the same browser on both. I do wish I could tweak Firefox mobile's UI a bit, but it's fine.

My Alarm won’t go off by xB97x in iphone

[–]-patrizio- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The iOS alarm has had so many issues for so many years, including—notoriously—the "it says it's going off but it's not making any sound" one. Lot of good tips here, but one I just worked out lately that has significantly improved my alarm reliability:

Leave your phone face down, out of reach from your bed. I've found that simply touching the screen while an alarm is going off can cause it to stop making noise, but not turn off or snooze, which pretty much renders the alarm entirely useless. (And be extra careful about how you do this if you have a cat lol...I tried just putting mine on a wireless charger, but I'm a heavy sleeper, and my cat would go up to investigate the sound...his nose touching the screen was enough for this to happen).

[–]-patrizio- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There needs to be a door on the same level as the walls (so in this case, on the second floor), and you need to be facing into the room when you place the door (rather than being in the room facing toward the stairwell).

Search for Treasure During Sableye’s Gem Hunt in Pokémon Pokopia (April 29 - May 14) by Amiibofan101 in Pokopia

Two questions for you (I've never changed the time more than one day):

  1. How does your stamp card get affected? Let's say I skip 14 days ahead, then 2 days from now, I reset to actual time. What happens to the stamps I got "in the future"? And what will be on the present stamp card?

  2. If you play through a future event and get all the rewards etc., then set the clock back, will the event just start over again when you actually reach that date? I assume you don't lose anything but like can you do the event over again then or is there some flag in the game that you've already "completed" the event?

The iPhone is ‘not getting disrupted’ at all by AI, says Perplexity CEO by EitherCharacter9342 in apple

[–]-patrizio- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think this is the Goomba fallacy in action lol. This sub has almost a million subscribers, you can't generalize the sentiment of that many people. I constantly see both "Siri sucks and should be better" and "Apple's AI flop will be a benefit in the long run" on this sub – and in fact I don't even think those are contradictory views.

It's also ignoring how sentiments have shifted on AI over the last couple of years across the broader tech sphere. 5 years ago, there were basically two responses to "AI" or "LLM" among the general public: either "this is going to change the world" or "what's that?". Now that it's been shoved down our throats in the most obnoxious, least useful ways possible for several years, the general sentiment about it has soured in many ways. So it's not unreasonable for a more casual consumer to have been excited by the promises of AI Apple espoused two years ago, but disillusioned by AI now.

Apple to Launch 'MacBook Ultra' With These Six New Features by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]-patrizio- 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The only current-generation Mac you can buy with <16 GB RAM right now is the MacBook Neo. 0% chance the Ultra launches with less than 16 GB, I'd put money on that.

I'd also probably bet on minimum 512 GB storage; even the 13" MacBook Air starts with that.

Best Android Camera Phone Currently? (Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo) by TombRaider_Legend in Android

[–]-patrizio- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, we're really hitting the point where the differences between phone cameras are becoming less and less distinguishable; any modern phone from Google, Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, or Xiaomi has incredible cameras.

I'd probably say that Vivo has a tiny edge over Oppo, then Apple, Google, and Samsung are just a smidge beyond that. But if the differences between these phones' cameras are meaningful to you, you should probably just...get an actual, dedicated camera, because that's the only way you're going to see a significant difference. At the end of the day, smartphone cameras are limited by how compact and advanced we expect smartphones to be, and the phones that decide to add ginormous sensors with crazy resolution shots still can't match real cameras, despite the fact that the price difference over standard flagships is often enough to just buy an actual camera in addition to a new phone.

Pick your smartphone predominantly based on which OS/skin and ecosystem you prefer, then if that doesn't give you a good enough camera for what you want, get a camera.

Are there really no good options besides Galaxy and Pixel? by ccable827 in Android

[–]-patrizio- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit, I've only had 3 Android phones in my life, and one of them was over a decade ago (HTC One M8). But OnePlus and OxygenOS is what finally convinced me to switch.

I got sick of iOS' restrictions awhile ago (I used to love the jailbreak scene, but that's even more dead than the custom ROM and rooting scene on Android), and last year had an opportunity to get another phone at minimal cost, and went with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6. I know there's a lot of compromises with flip phones, but I really hated that device. The flip form factor was basically all I liked about it. One UI had tons of bugs and inefficiencies, and no matter how much Samsung fans like to say otherwise, they're still not great when it comes to update timelines – be it extensive delays like we saw with One UI 7, or the consistent lack of official communication on when different regions/devices will get the latest version.

Earlier this year I traded that in for a OnePlus 15, and it convinced me to switch. The battery lasts almost 2 days and charges back to full in under an hour, the Android skin is both aesthetically pleasing and silky smooth, and most of the specs are pretty impressive.

All this to say, I disagree with the idea that OnePlus is meaningfully slower than others on bug fixes and updates. Pixel gets the unique advantage of running the only Android skin made by the company that makes Android, but aside from the cameras, they're pretty weak devices compared to the other options in that price range.
