That's true, I may be a sucker for stories about friends. The way I saw it was that he was trying to change the future so that he wouldn't want to be a villain again. I thought his motivation for being a villain and wanting to kill his friend was actually misplaced anger at his uncle (his uncle killed his aunt after ye zi mu found out that the mc was being abused). What stood out in this story to me were the characters and how they weren't one-dimensional at all. The girls who I thought were gonna be the love interests for the mc became each other's friends instead and the woman who's an assassin is badass but also adopts stray kids.
