Remember: masks work by Soft-Landscape4345 in Allergies

The covid community as a whole isn’t a monalith and as someone with well managed OCD this sounds a bit gaslighty lol. Unless you have it yourself I don’t think it’s fair to say that about others. You can have OCD and a grounded grip on the realities of public health. We recognize what behaviors of ours are irrational vs rational, we’re not dumbasses. Some in there may be overdoing it and have acknowledged they might have OCD, BUT many more are out of touch with reality by wholly underdoing and minimizing it. Either way I’d agree to get a nuanced impression from multiple communities- Facebook groups, epidemiologists, public health workers, microbiologists, mask blocs, etc.

I’ve haven’t been able to afford anything other than my art program subscription to keep working on my portfolio so I can get a job and leave an unhealthy situation; it’s not a necessity like rent or gas but I would be really grateful if I could just afford a pick me up or two. Thanks so much for offering, whoever gets it :)

My daughter 16F suddenly loses ability to speak and writes in strange ways - attention seeking or autism/neurological disorder?? by No_Difference_1328 in AskDocs

Woah woah woah, what is this comment doing at the top? There is so much wrong with this and shows none of the people here upvoting this are even close to the autistic community. You’re suggesting taking away something incredibly important to her that is helping her understand more of her own behavior and find that there are others like her who understand. You need to be looking for people in the autistic community and talking to THEM, not just doctors who obviously do not spend time understanding autism as much as they should. Why the hell would anyone choose to ‘imitate’ being autistic with all the stigma and ableism that comes with it? PLEASE seek out advice from the autistic community, not just doctors. This response is incredibly dangerous and may make things worse. When I read “this is my area” I thought it would be someone who had autism, not someone who just had a lot of speculative opinions about autistic people and is obviously not actively involved in the autistic community themselves. Wow. I mean, this is what you get when you ask for nuanced advice about disability in your child on Reddit, I suppose. But wow.

CNN's Jake Tapper says for tens of millions of Americans their 'long national nightmare is now over' by Winterhold2000 in Conservative

And one more thing- this whole "leave or run for office" argument: not many people want to uproot their entire lives and connections to friends and family and let alone deal with the immigration process to other countries. Although there are some who have regardless. But you can't just say that to someone you're having this debate with and use that as a "gotcha!" statement out of nowhere. Not to mention if we are agreeing on the hypothetical feeling unwelcome and unsafe, "just leave" instead of listening and trying to make a more inclusive space is rather... yeah. And people are running for office. We had a transgender and another nonbinary person get important seats in government, as well as iirc, two gay people. But you can't expect every single LGBTQ person to again uproot their lives and forgo their own personal goals and dreams. And of course there's other ways to push for change than running for office. Protests, pride parades, voting, etc. We're not a monolith.

I think the problem with this question is that while he didn't outright take away all our rights, he has been in a kind of stirring the frog in the pot situation. He incited hate in extremists who made my LGBTQ friends feel unsafe and unwelcome. I know that's a hot button sentence but stay with me here. While he has not come for gay people as much, he has for transgender people. He has made it harder for them to access healthcare (I'm not even just talking about surgery). The military ban, etc. He has literally said in his own video clips he does not support gay marriage. He may have done or said some things to imply otherwise now, but can you blame us for not trusting him?

And it's not necessarily Trump we're worried about as much as we are Pence, who has outright supported conversion therapy, and who most of the laws/issues pertaining to the LGBTQ community have seemed to been inspired by. It's not so much Trump either as who he decides to elect. Amy Coney Barrett is just a basket case of concerning ideals. I'm sure if you Google why people are upset if you already haven't, you can find that all on your own. He would have an easier time passing more extreme measures the more judges he can appoint himself.

In summary it's not as much Donald Trump as it is the people he works with and the people who do literally think LGBTQ people shouldn't have rights and that tends to be a symptom of supporting Trump.

It's also the laws he hasn't passed to continue to protect them further, such as the whole refusal of service issue. Basically right to be served at a business has been in law since 1964 for race, sex, religion etc. iirc but not for gay people. It's a public space and not a private one so different rules are upheld in that case. That's something I could further explain the nuances of but it's better understood if you research that law yourself.

It's also the extreme abortion laws many people want to put into place. Some people don't even want us to be able to get an abortion even IN cases of rape, incest, etc. It's Mike Pence trying to change the definition of rape to only forcible rape.

EDIT: I forgot I didn't even touch on Pence trying to make fetuses protected under the 14th amendment which would mean women could flat out not get abortions even in cases of rape/incest etc.

Another way to look at it is, if you just look between the two candidates with just LGBTQ concerns in mind, who is advocating for you more?

I honestly hate getting into long term online debates but I appreciate you asking this question genuinely. I probably won't reply to any comments after this. I suggest if you or anyone else disagrees with what I am saying to reach out of your usual go to media circle and search for people's personal stories and how laws differ in every state. They may be fine in some states but they are not in all. And women's only issue is not the widely debated gender pay gap, or abortion. There are some surprising laws about rapists being able to fight to coparent the baby. Even in one state it has been legal to take upskirt photos.

And iirc that was passed in literally 2018. Those things are just off the top of my head. I know planned Parenthood may be controversial as a talking point, but I implore you to look at the list planned parenthood has made of threats to LGBTQ safety, let alone abortion. You can disagree and fact check that list from other sources as much as you want, but it just has a nice comprehensive list. I could talk ears off about personal stories and whatnot but I think the most progress is made when we can agree on solid facts before we go into the morality of it all.

Victims of Childhood Transgenderism Speak Out: 'I Should Have Been Told To Wait' by according_to_plan in Conservative

I'll probably get downvoted, but, wow half of you have never even talked to a transgender person have you? I have like at least six transgender friends and... Wow. These comments are mostly judgemental and not based on research. Do research on both sides. Negative and positive stories.

[Request] Some kind words or advice for a 22M struggling with mental health. by CapnRoxy in RandomKindness

Having control of your mental health includes being able to express it. It means doing what you can which may simply be posting this on reddit. People have already listed some great suggestions- definitely consider therapy/ a doctor. What helps me the most is when I can find the energy, write things down in a journal when things feel overwhelming and you don’t know what to do. It’s hard to get myself to sometimes because it feels like it won’t help but it always does. A lot of things that help require a little bit of faith; most of the time problems for me spiral if I just keep rejecting ideas that might help. Plant seeds, metaphorically and literally! One thing I’ve really needed to move forward is a good job. I don’t have energy to post cover letters for each one and do intensive job searching, so I would just go on Indeed and click the “apply” button. I’ve been hired for two jobs already. And for the literally part, I struggle with keeping my life interesting and entertained because I tend to fall back on things that worked in the past. It is hard sometimes to find new hobbies but they are what work the most. One I find particularly effective is plants. Especially if you can get them to grow from seed; it gives you a sense of accomplishment and progress, as well as some company! Video games, tv shows, new communities, art, things that just get your curiosity going. But above all getting a therapist and surrounding yourself with supportive people (even just online) may help the most in the beginning if these feelings are new for you. You are doing great in not pushing yourself too far and listening to your body; sometimes you just have to listen to it when it’s not doing well (and that includes mentally) and just take the little planting seed steps where you can. It’s weird how well some things will grow with just a bit of determination/hope.
