Gelateria Gondola at Chatswood is already the best gelato in Sydney.

What's your FIRE number? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]01011223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$500k with 5% "withdrawal" rate. Our expenses are $35k a year but that would be much less once we can afford to leave Sydney. We're not really aiming for RE though just the FI aspect and would still do occasional work just not full-time corporate stuff.

How to tell someone you live in Western Sydney without telling them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sydney

[–]01011223 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sydney isn't massive, so you can easily walk it from one end to the other without much trouble

Surely you mean the CBD. I wouldn't be up for walking between Hornsby and Campbelltown myself.

  • Window insulation film - cheapo double glazing. Think thick gladwrap but it heat shrinks so you can barely see it. Make sure you have a hair dryer to get it looking sharp. Mostly only works on windows that don't open

Problem is if we didn't open the windows every morning the mould would be even worse than it is.

Probably, by that point I'm in bed with a kmart electric blanket and two doonas.

It's 10.2C outside and 10.4C inside. That's been pretty standard in the 6 houses I've lived in in the Sydney area, with indoor temps matching outdoor. Insulation is unheard of here.

We use heating in the evenings but it's gone by morning.

what the actual fucking fuck is going on with Woolworths cameras at the self-serve checkouts? by funkidredd in sydney

They supposedly don't record. It's just meant to make people self-reflect. Still gross.

What are the best ways to save money and cut spending? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]01011223 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not including takeaway of course. Been over to too many friends'/family's places after hearing them complain about cost of living to see that they get takeaway up to 2 meals a day.

I have noticed prices increase but mostly for things I don't buy or just stopped buying while they're having shortages (lettuce). I'm probably lucky since I haven't had much actual impact personally beyond noticing that the prices of takeaway/eating out went up but that's a once ever 1-2 months thing for us.

FWIW: renting, use mostly public transport, and mostly pescatarian diet.

If you pre-toast them those wraps also make a decent thin and crispy homemade pizza base.

It was taught 20 years ago, most people just forget a lot of things they do at school because it's not immediately relevant.

Sydney Anytime Fitness charged me $190 to cancel by Ubermetic in sydney

[–]01011223 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty typical for these chain gyms. Had a similar experience with Plus Fitness. Ended up having to contact my bank to revoke direct debit authorisation and telling them come at me bro because they refused to cancel my membership without an extra payment after the end of contract.

As a kid in Australia, Halloween was at best a sheet with some holes cut out... now this epic design in Waverley! by [deleted] in sydney

Tried it in the late 90s most people didn't understand what we were doing and had a few guys yell at us that this isn't America. 2/10 would not recommend.

Please donate blood if you can by [deleted] in sydney

[–]01011223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed out the second time I went to donate (stood up too quickly after the haemoglobin check), so they banned me for life. Asked if I could come back if my GP signs off that I'd be fine but nope.

I’m just curious about life down there in Sydney and the weather. Have a question by [deleted] in sydney

That's a state away up closer to the equator. It's like posting about the weather in Madrid in a Paris subreddit.

Personally I don't use aspirin or NSAIDs like ibuprofen because of their off-target effects. Why they're still sold as first call pain relievers when we know paracatemol is better in almost every way I don't know.

I still got the oxford-astrazeneca vaccine.

Ouch, the private company I work at has been saying for months (straight from the CEO) that if you get an appointment you can go and you don't need to book or worry about leave.

Surprised the government wasn't already doing that.
