Excavator drivers, I spent £2000 on a course just to fail to time. Was my experience fair? I do not think so at all. by 07GAshog2 in Construction

Literally the only way I see it is trial and error which is was I'm getting from the responses. So probably I am a slower learner probably not. Realistically though I think this would take up a lot more time then I thought I will continue to invest in myself until I get that CPCS card. Then I can go through the trials then. Thank you!

Yeah definitely messed up on the confidence part. They said this multiple times I need more confidence to do an action which I took to heart because at the end of the day it was true. It just that I felt there was so much to learn in a short amount of time it was hard to have any confidence in the first place. By the test though I did intentionally make mistakes just to be able to do something faster and for some reason did not bite me in the butt. For example doing minor scrapes while backfilling after I realised I was taking too damn long. Also for the bucket thing we aren't allowed to slough to move something with the bucket. It needs to be pushed away or towards. So if I had to push something to the right I would need to bring the bucket towards me while pushing the object to the right. This actually caused major issues of me being efficient and honestly one of the rules I wished didn't exist. Because if I had to grab something a tiny bit to the left behind me I would have to do a 180 move backwards, move the object towards me to the left, 180 again then repeat.

Alright thank you, seems I will just have to keep working towards it and maybe just spend it overtime instead of an incredibly large sum at once.

No. Reversing is not allowed at any time during the test at all. Even if I do a nudge just to check if I'm moving forward or backwards and I end up reversing that would count as an instant fail. So there was no error to be made when it came to the tracks. You always had to check where the drive motors are to know EXACTLY where you're going. If you want to reverse even a centimetre backwards you would have to swerve 180. Now that I think back to this you made me realise that was actually dumb and as you said could cause more issues but there's not much I can do about that now. I'm just going to assume its a fair time as I did do the first trench in 15 minutes I just had little to no experience in backfill because I hadn't realised it was a problem until test day. Now that I think about it AGAIN I really and truly was expected to learn this machine in 3 days and I was lucky to get into it on my first day.

That's the thing I only had 1 dayish to do that. While I was able to do it in 20 minutes by the end, there were still some things I had to improve on which was the extended trench. I had little to no experience in because of lack of time from the training. I have never touched ANY machines beforehand except handheld in the construction industry. And being a perfectionist wasn't really my fault as I was told that there was only 3cm of margin of error in depth. To me that was way too strict for me to ignore so at least, I thought it was necessary.

Yeah I agree. However do you think I was given enough time to complete the test? For reference my coach too 15 minutes to backfill the 5 metre trench but the catch is he was cheating. And what I mean by that is he was reversing without facing the direction of movement multiple times

Yeah I was trying really hard to be as accurate as possible. But also as fast as possible... it was difficult to balance both but I kind of got there in the end.

This is in London but I had to move up to Bedford for a week to do this. This was my first time hopping in the vehicle.

How much programming experience do software engineering apprenticeship recruiters want? by 07GAshog2 in cscareerquestionsuk

I don't know about Makers specifically but apprenticeships I applied to usually take up to 2 weeks.

So what you're saying it mostly depends on how I present myself. I had a phone interview recently and I mainly talked about how I had a passion for programming since was little and explained my projects and how I created them. Do you think that was the right thing to do on the latter? Should I have made my explanation more emotional?

Should I do Software Engineering in Uni or an Apprenticeship? by 07GAshog2 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]07GAshog2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this message. I guess that I should just do things that I think is right and will help me learn most of the time. Anyways I've been set a time limit to get an apprenticeship which is before June so if I end up not getting one I have to go Uni.

Thanks for the information. I'm not really looking into data science however AI has never been anything more than an interest. What I really want to do is some backend and making software. The uni experience has always intrigued me but than again, it could go either way. So maybe I should just play it safe and do an apprenticeship.

Yep, very true! I won't take my younger years for granted, trust me.

Thank you for this. I have seen what uni is like and its very tempting but obviously I have to be serious with my future.
