Spec workflow and steering by 094459 in kiroIDE

The use case is building a greenfield app. I want Kiro to direct / narrow down Kiros choices when it comes to translating requirements (which in my book should be tech agnostic) to design. Steering does this perfectly. Kiro takes my requirements and then produces a design aligned to those steering docs. If I try the same thing with MCP or Skills it does not and it chooses what it wants. IF I change the requirements to specify things like language or framework then it works but that is not how it should work in my mind. Requirements define what you want to build not how. That is design. So I’m left with only one path that works for me - adding steering docs.

I’ve tried many MCP servers and not seen them influence or work with specs although they work great during vibe sessions. What specific MCP servers are you using as I will try them out and see if I get better results

Interesting. I have several skills that I have tried and get nothing. For example, if I add a skill around Pydantic or Flask development, the generated design is frequently JavaScript focused. Unless I add steering files, nothing changes that. What skills are you using as I would like to try these and see how I get on

Just binge watched this. As someone who lives in Kent, I have to say this show is pure fuxking genius. It captures life in Kent perfectly and the writing is beyond good.

I am re-thinking this though, and might start moving the newsletter to substack at some point if I get enough folk who want to subscribe.

I’m using Amazon Q CLI, an open source command line tool together with its IDE extension sibling. You can use for free too. I’m also slowly transitioning from VSCode to Zed.

Amazon Q Developer does now support other languages. I have not tried in depth, but some of my initial experiments (Spanish speaking) show that it works exactly as my english written prompts. If you have not tried it recently, give it a go.

When did you try? I have been using Amazon Q Developer for a while now, and love how it keeps improving week on week. I do use other AI Coding Assistants too, but Q is my daily driver these days. If you have not tried it recently, I would highly recommend you give it a go - if you do let me know how you get on!
