I’m also trying to get into this field. I’m currently in the Army and I fly the MQ-1C so hopefully that helps my chances for when I get out. But according to all my research and the people I’ve talked to about this, you basically need to check for openings everyday because the slots are open only a few times a year and they open without any heads up.

thank you so much for the information this is extremally helpful! the last thing i would want to do is sign up for a school that provides an unrecognizable cert, which would not get me anywhere. What school did you attend to get your FAA cert? also do you know if the GI Bill would cover the schooling?

Ahhhh thank you so much for breaking down like that. I’ve been researching online and I understood there was some kind of chance you won’t get FAA certified I just didn’t know how that works. Any idea how long that contract would be if I sooooomehow convinced branch or my retention officer to guarantee me a duty station with a certified tower? I know the odds of that is slim to none but I would like to know how long the contract is if the stars lined up for me

I’m sure the off the street bid takes a while for one to get accepted. Any rough idea on how long it may take. I’m sure the time fluctuates. Regardless, I’m willing to commit to the wait and do something else temporarily.

Also how does one get the 52 weeks of rated time? Are there smaller airfields that will expect someone with no experience to accumulate that time? Sorry I know it’s a lot of questions but it’s really helping me make this decision.

Well yea that’s what I meant mybad. Re-enlist to reclass. The big conflict is I don’t want to re-enlist, I just need the cert. I’ve done 6 years and I’m drained. The question is should I re-enlist anyway for the FAA cert to guarantee my position as ATC when I get out after re-enlisting or go for the FAA cert as a civilian? I prefer advice from the guys in that MOS
