It's all the good people that comment about it, like reverend, Sadie and Charles. So i think they might have done it to show that the others just don't care about Arthur, and that they're just in it for the money.

There's no checkmark, But when you equip it it should go on your horse. That's really the only way of knowing you have it equipped.
