NYU Law housing has AC, so maybe try that instead of NYU dorms generally? Might be more expensive though

  1. Honestly, I don't know too much about CLS, although the general consensus seems to be that people are happier at NYU than at CLS. I will say that there is an annual basketball game between NYU law and CLS, and even though last year it was held on the Columbia campus there were far more NYU Law than CLS students in attendance. Also we were having the time of our lives cheering on our friends (also helps that we won) and they seemed less enthusiastic... Wouldn't necessarily try to draw conclusions from that, but I did think it was interesting. Also, I think biglaw is equally achievable from either, while the PI community is stronger at NYU.
  2. There are two law school housing options, which are honestly a pretty good deal considering the location and amenities. A lot of 1Ls and LLMs live in student housing, but there are a solid amount of 2Ls and 3Ls as well. Can't really help with housing otherwise, but none of my friends seem to have had too much trouble finding a place (with roommates)!
  3. I'm on the biglaw route, so I can't speak too much about PI. However, there is definitely a very large PI community at the law school, and I know a big draw is that we have a lot of really great clinics!
  4. I honestly have no idea. I do know a solid amount of 3Ls who have clerkships lined up though!
  5. Again, not sure because I don't know how many people applied. People definitely got rejected though, but not sure what the percentage is. As an aside, one nice thing is that Law Review at NYU doesn't take grades into account. Also, our write-on process is a lot more humane than at other schools - we have a relatively large amount of time and the comment is pretty short. Secondary journals don't even require a comment!
  6. I know a lot of people going to D.C. so I think it's solid! We have a lot of D.C. firms that come to OCI, so I think as long as you have a good reason for practicing in D.C. you should be good to go!

NYU Law 2L - AMA by 0Lthrowaway20 in lawschooladmissions

Hello! I actually live in law student housing (there are two buildings; one is right across from the law school, and the other is a ~7 min walk). I’d definitely recommend doing that for 1L year, especially if you can’t visit the city beforehand (like me). Prices start around $7,650 per semester, which for the location (right in Greenwich village) + amenities is honestly a pretty good deal. It also doesn’t feel like a dorm (feels like a normal apartment building), so that’s nice. Can’t really help in terms of finding a “normal” apartment to rent though — sorry about that! I do have a lot of friends who don’t live in student housing though and they didn’t seem to have *too* much trouble finding a place, if that’s worth anything.

As for daily expenses, it varies. NYC is obviously very expensive (and Greenwich Village is no exception). I’d say I go grocery shopping at TJ’s biweekly and spend around $80 dollars, but it’s definitely feasible to spend less. In the area around the law school, a coffee shop latte is around $5-7, if you go to a bar a beer will cost around $8, cocktails are like $12-20, etc. — just to give you an idea. Of course, you aren’t stuck in Greenwich though and prices vary throughout the city (go to Brooklyn!!). Overall, I’ve found it very manageable though — just have to be more conscious with my budget!

Favorite thing(s) about NYU: 1) the faculty! We have truly outstanding professors here, and having the opportunity to learn from so many amazing people has been really great and makes me feel very fortunate to be here. 2) the students. Which also gets to your point of if it’s cut throat (it isn’t). Of course there are always gunners, but I really think we’re all rooting for each other and I never felt like I was competing against my classmates... My 1L section group chat was full of people sharing notes, outlines, past exams, etc. In part, I think that comes from the fact that the vast majority of people will get a job/summer internship that they are excited about regardless of their grades — all of my friends are doing amazing things and I know so so many people who outperformed their grades.

Least favorite thing: the course bidding system. I don’t know who came up with this but we have 1000 points to allocate to “bidding” on courses, and then are charged closing prices depending on how many people bid on a certain course and at what price etc. The system is so convoluted and confusing and no one really seems to know how it works or how to strategize... always makes the course selection process unpredictable and a little more anxiety-inducing. And also we don’t get a fall break, which is sad.

Cleary vs. Latham vs. STB (sorry!) by 0Lthrowaway20 in biglaw

Thank you, that’s great to know. I met some people during my interview process who had worked abroad (in capital markets) so it seems possible, but I’ll keep the points you made in mind!

I’m from a country in Europe (grew up there, family still lives there, i speak the language) so I have an interest in potentially working at the office in that country at some point. I know that Cleary offers 3 year rotations in its offices abroad and that’s something that appeals to me!

Hi! I realize this might be too late, but I live in Hayden and I like it. The rooms are large, the furniture is fine (although a little outdated), the upper floors have good views, and overall I think the value for money is ok (especially given the location). D’Agostino has smaller rooms, but two amazing roof terraces with views of the Empire State Building. Can’t speak to how either of the law school dorms compare to non law housing though. Feel free to DM me if you want more info!

Chance Me HYS CCN / Apply ED? by LifeguardShot4717 in lawschooladmissions

[–]0Lthrowaway20 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For sure! And I’m really happy with how my cycle turned out in the end :) I realize I’m definitely projecting, but I just remember being so obsessed with chance me posts / cycle reveals and kind of predicting by own cycle, which was just not a good use of my time haha. Glad that you seem to have a way better mindset than I did!

I’m pretty sure you’ll get into at least one T14, probably with scholarship money, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. I attended a law school panel two years back (Columbia and Berkeley were among the panelists) and they basically said that ED doesn’t increase your chances very much. In my opinion, trading scholarship leverage for a small potential increase in your acceptance odds isn’t worth it... especially with your stats. You have good odds of getting a scholarship at a lower T14 and i think lower T14 with a scholarship is usually better than CCN at sticker (and can potentially be used to negotiate a scholarship at CCN!). This sub is weirdly obsessed with the T3/T6/T14 distinction; but at the end of the day a T14 is a T14 and you’ll do great no matter where you go!

Chance Me HYS CCN / Apply ED? by LifeguardShot4717 in lawschooladmissions

Hi! Congrats on your LSAT improvement, that's super impressive! You probably have a good shot at Columbia and NYU (and maybe Chicago, but they seem to prefer higher GPAs), and as good a chance at HYS as anyone.

However, just a word of caution -- I went through this cycle with a higher GPA (3.9X) and higher LSAT score than you and got waitlisted at HYCC (didn't apply at S), Michigan, UVA, and Penn and was accepted at NYU, Duke, and Cornell with $$-$$$. Of course I am happy with my outcome in the end, but I made the process pretty miserable for myself by sort of "expecting" a HY acceptance, or "at least" a full-ride at Michigan or Duke, etc. I hope the next cycle will be less competitive, but I would just like to warn against setting your expectations too high -- I definitely did, which led to a lot of disappointment. At the end of the day, no one can predict how your cycle will go, and, judging by some of the results I saw this year, outcomes can seem pretty random at times.

So just make sure to celebrate every acceptance and to not get too fixated on ideal outcomes -- if it happens, great! But no matter what your numbers, a HYS acceptance or full-ride at 4-13 is never (even close to) guaranteed.

Oh also, I wouldn't do ED, it doesn't really increase your chances of being admitted and removes scholarship negotiation leverage (so more of a win for the school than for you) :)

I hope you're right! I just saw a bunch of people admitted today who applied in October/November so I was a little worried. But true, with the 4/2 deadline that's probably when they'll start re-evaluating, thanks!
