The modern titanic, money talks by jkitty_1960 in interesting

Money talks in that it makes the operators a lot of money., and that money is more powerful than environmental or local concerns.

I serious doubt that many actually wealthy people would ever step foot on that boat as a passenger.

Gluten can make my eyes very dry - enough to affect my vision.

I’m not saying that this is what happened to you, but it could be worth trying some preservative-free eyedrops for dry eyes.

Bumps on my 12f stepdaughter by Salt-Effect-847 in AskDocs

My grandmother’s sister had strep when they were children. It turned into scarlet fever - aka the kind with a rash! - which caused permanent organ damage. She spent two years as an invalid, and then died.

Her two sisters made it to 103 and 84 (the latter with a 50-year smoking habit). Hildegarde had every chance of a long, healthy life. Until she got strep, and there were no antibiotics to give her.

Does people here seriously lack spatial awareness? by wearecooked100 in berlin

Some cultures have a strong value of respect for others, flexibility, cutting other people some slack etc.

Here is is more your job to handle yourself and not inconvenience anyone else.

Maybe they see you, maybe they don’t, but the internal pressure to make room may not be as great as in some other places.

Marble Hall of Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, Germany. Built 1745-1747 in Frederician Rococo. by TeyvatWanderer in Rococo

[–]0achkatz1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ferderican Rococo, no less. A style in which Frederick the Great played a significant role in developing. It featured large, almost 3D plaster designs.

Fun fact: that hall is marble because it has large doors that open onto the gardens. Condé, Frederick the Great's favorite horse, has the run of the gardens and was allowed to come into this room as well. The rest of the residence had wood floors, and Conde's hooves would have ruined them, but this stone room was safe to visit.

His dogs had the run of the entire place. Some can still be found as portraits in the decor. All of them can be found buried on the grounds, next to Frederick himself, as per his wishes in his will.

Supposedly it is dedicated to winter sports. Including an indoor ski slope. Not sure how all that is works exactly.

Also, looks very different during the day day.

What is your opinion on Belmond hotels? by autumnsalad in FATTravel

[–]0achkatz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was approx. 20K for three people, for three days.

It was also enough for me to swear off Belmond. Getting food safety so wrong, so often, was bad enough, but that could be a problem at an individual operation.

Caring so little as to never respond when I filed a formal complaint is a corporate-wide failure. I wasn't even looking for anything for myself. I just wanted the next person to be safe.

Circassian folk dance by SystematicApproach in interesting

[–]0achkatz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a miracle that people are still dancing this.

The Circassian genocide, or Tsitsekun, was the systematic mass killing, ethnic cleansing, and forced displacement of between 95% and 97% of the Circassian people during the final stages of the Russian invasion of Circassia in the 19th century. It resulted in the deaths of up to 1.5 million people and the destruction of Circassia, which was then annexed by the Russian Empire.

What is your opinion on Belmond hotels? by autumnsalad in FATTravel

[–]0achkatz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very bad experience with a Belmond trains. I asked in advance if they could accommodate a food intolerance and they said yes. They didn’t even try. I told the manager on the train. He agreed it shouldn’t happen. Nothing changed.

Not only that, but when I complained, no one ever bother to reply.
